The Volvo S60 Polestar Performance Concept
|   Wednesday, June 20, 2012
Finally, after years of rumors, hints, and all that, the curtains have been lifted; now we know that Volvo is planning on a new model, or rather a series of models that will be developed in partnership with Polestar. At the beginning there was the C30 Polestar performance concept unveiled back in 2010, and for a while things stayed at that. However, things have recently begun to stir.

These days, the partnership between the 2 companies has given birth to the Volvo S60 performance car.
As the name implies, this is a car based on the S60. This seems to be a continuation of the previous concept which was based on Volvo's C30. Just like its predecessor, this will show off the S60's performance potential. This move also illustrates the growing level of trust and cooperation between Volvo and Polestar.

The performance concept is well able to take on worthy opponents like the BMW M3, Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG and, yes, the Lexus IS F. It debuted at the Gothenburg stretch of the TTA Swedish racing series.

The concept gets power from the same engine fitted on the production version of the S60, the 3 liter straight-six engine, but this unit has been tweaked to pump out some 508 horsepower and 424 lb-ft of torque. Top speed is estimated at 186 mph and breeching the 60 mph barrier happens in just 3.9 seconds after starting the car. In order for those numbers to be possible, Polestar engineers were forced to turn to a number of modifications concerning the cylinder head, combustion chambers, inlet manifold and intake, plus, they had to install custom connecting rods, a new Garret turbocharger, and a 3.5 inch stainless steel exhaust system stretching from the turbo back.

Of course, the modifications don't end with just the engine. The drivetrain and chassis were also tampered with, in a good way, naturally. Thus, the transmission system has been overhauled to a better 6 speed manual unit, while the Haldex all-wheel drive system was also improved. The whole car was lowered by 30 mm, while the chassis was made longer by adding an extra 40 mm in the back and 20 mm up front. The vehicle is suitable not just for performance driving, but also for taveling long distances thanks to the Öhlins suspension, reinforced anti-roll bars and 19 inches of light alloy wheels.

Brembo brakes with 6 piston calipers and 380 mm ventilated discs in the front and 302 mm discs out back will make certain the 3600 lb car comes to a stop within a reasonable distance. A carbon fiber diffuser and a custom body kit are also included on the modification list.

"We are proud to present Polestar's interpretation of the Volvo S60. It's a car developed with our own preferences in mind which, we from experience know, are shared by a group of active drivers." That was what Polestar founder, Christian Dahl, said when the concept was unveiled.
Furthermore, it seems that if demand is high enough the concept will actually see production, although a very limited number is what we can expect.
