The Vauxhall Ampera Set a New Record Making a Two Way Trip From U.K. to France Through a Tunnel
|   Sunday, October 21, 2012
Vauxhall Motors is a British Automobile Manufacturing Company owned by General Motors. The Ampera is one of their unique creations. It is known as the Chevrolet Volt in U.S. but the name Ampera is well known around Europe. It is an E-REV plug in Hybrid car which can travel more than 65 miles without recharging.

The Ampera set a new record by travelling through a tunnel and returned from U.K. to France. This ground breaking and record breaking act was done by none other than Top Gear magazine's reporter Dan Read and his partner the Vauxhall Ampera.
This record is another one of the achievement stored in its name like the multiple awards it won.
Charlie Turner, the Editor-in-Chief of top gear magazine had an idea. It was that the magazine will be the first to drive an all production car through a tunnel if possible. He wished to drive the car through the railway tunnel beneath the English Channel named the Channel Tunnel from Flokestone to Calais in northern France.

Luckily there was a service tunnel 75 meters beneath the English Channel and fortunately the Eurotunnel agreed to the deal with Top Gear. The only catch is that they have to drive a battery powered car while the driver is underground for safety reasons since safety crew uses special type of vehicle made for the purpose.

To fulfill that agreement Top Gear journalist Dan Read could of choose any electric car since any electric vehicle can complete the course. But why Dan chooses the Ampera. Because there was another challenge Dan was facing. He has to complete the whole Journey from U.K. to France without refueling or recharging. So the Ampera was the automatic choice.

According to Mr., Turner the Top Gear team always appreciates a good challenge especially when the English Channel is involved in it. Since the telly boys overcome the challenge with only an amphibious truck the Top Gear Editor-in-Chief was looking an opportunity to do it with a production car and finally Dan Read they did it with the help of the current green car of the year the Vauxhall Ampera.

At the starting of the 270 miles trip the Ampera started in Hold mode which is a function of holding the charge in a lithium-ion battery on board using the range extender of the car to generate power to supply it to make the car run. And as soon as the car arrived at the entrance of the tunnel the car's normal mode was switched on and the stored charge in the battery kicked in as power source.

The Ampera just not complete the challenge but it achieved a battery range of 60miles which beats the previous 25 to 50 miles record. Ian Allen, the launch manager of Ampera was confident that the car would easily complete the challenge and they are delighted that with the help of a skilled driver the Ampera set the new record. Mr. Allen also admitted that the Ampera is the electric car which is suitable for any journey, and the challenge proved that.
