The Toyota FT-86 Open Concept Car: The Preview To The Future-86 GT Convertible
|   Friday, March 08, 2013
The real star of the Toyota stand at Geneva will be FT-86 Open, the concept which announces a cabrio version of the accessible GT-86 coupe. The Toyota FT-86 Open concept, launched at the Geneva Motor Show, will study if the public is open to a future version of the convertible sports model. The convertible will offer a sense of communion with nature, while keeping a sense of communion with the car. A convertible version of the GT86 (sold by Subaru, under the name of BRZ) will reach series production if the prototype presented at the Geneva Motor Show demonstrates that it can attract enough customers.

Dedicated to the tourists attracted by light sports cars with rear-wheel drive, the new FT-86 Open intends to preserve unaltered the qualities of his covered sibling. The Toyota engineers have extensively studied the new structure of the body so as not to affect the distribution of mass on the axle (53/47 front / rear) or the total weight, which remained low at just 1,257 kg. To perform these tasks, the FT-86 Open turned to the solution of a removable textiles pavilion. Compact and extremely lightweight, it becomes enfolded directly into the trunk without affecting the interior space offered to the four passengers. This means performance should not differ significantly from the GT86 coupe, with a 0-100 km/h time of 7.7sec and a 217 km/h top speed; those are good estimates for a manual gearbox equipped car.

Under the very attractive body we find the same platform as the coupe and the same 2-liter boxer engine that develops 200 horsepower and 205 Nm.
For the interior, the Japanese have brought major changes, preferring to play with warm tones. The seats are white leather, board is blue and mats are yellow. Not missing aluminum pedals and other metallic inserts of course. The multimedia system was taken from a lower audio unit, but only temporarily, because the series version will share the same technologies as the coupe.

Designers had planned from the outset of the GT-86 building process to offer a convertible variant at one point so we assume the outstanding driving dynamics of the hardtop haven't been spoiled much by letting the sun in.

One thing that disappoints is the resemblance of the FT-86 to the Honda S2000 sports car, especially from the side. While clearly being different beasts, they could be cousins. The S2000 wasn't a bad looking car, but it was hoped for something a bit more extravagant for the GT-86.
The dimensions and the configuration of the Japanese cabriolet places it in the same area with the BMW Z4 and Mercedes SLK, but has the advantage of having a rear seat (even if the two passenger will not enjoy a very generous space).

A production-ready Toyota GT86 cabriolet would command a premium over the coupe, pricing it at around 31,000 euros, with its key rivals ranging from top spec Mazda MX-5s to basic Nissan 370Z and Audi TT roadsters.
