The Revised Specs For the Porche 918 Spyder
|   Wednesday, May 22, 2013
In order to keep up with rivals from McLaren with their P1 and the LaFerrari, Porsche decided it's about time to update the specs for its 918 Spyder. Earlier this week the German car maker revealed the updated full specs for the supercar, as well as a prototype with those specs.

The main goal for developing this car is improving the efficiency and performance figure without having to compromise either. However, with the latest news it seems that this time Porsche has gone about things a little differently.

The basis of the 918 Spyder is a monocoque chassis, made from lightweight carbon fiber reinforced polymer. That brings the total weight to a hefty 3715 lbs. There is a package called Weissach that cuts a bit off that weight, bringing the numbers down to 3616 lbs.

To make up for the increased weight, the Spyder comes with an all wheel drive. In this particular case we have a through-the-road setup thanks to the car's hybrid system. A V8 engine displacing 4.6 liters is mated with an electric motor as well as a 7-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission that moves the rear axle, while another electric motor propels the front one.

The engine is bale to develop 608 horses and can go up at 9800 rpm. The engine is based on the one found on the RS Spyder Le Mans prototype. The electric motors also develop respectable numbers: 154 horsepower (in the rear) and 127 horsepower (front). That brings total horse count at an impressive 887 and 940 lb-ft of torque.

The driver can choose between several driving modes: E-Power, Hybrid, Sport Hybrid, Race Hybrid and Hot Lap. Accessing them is easy due to the steering wheel controls.

The all-electric E-Power mode is the default setting when starting the car. On electricity alone it can cover 18 miles and the batteries need 7 hours to recharge at an ordinary house plug. In this mode 0-62 mph is reached in 7 seconds and 93 mph stands as the top speed.

On the other end of the spectrum, we have the Hot Lap mode where the only consideration is performance and no thought is given to economy, only scoring the best lap. While in this mode, Porsche thinks that the 918 Spyder will beat the 7 minute barrier on Nürburgring.

The AWD and some other advantages over its rivals are the elements that Porsche thinks will allow its car to make that record possible. One of those advantages is the four-wheel steering system (meaning an electro-mechanical adjustment system is found at each rear wheel). Active aerodynamics are also important, especially when the car runs in Race mode.

The final numbers look like this: 0-60 mph needs 2.8 seconds when fully geared, 124 mph are gone past after 7.9 seconds, and 186 mph fly by after 23 seconds. The later number may seem problematic, as McLaren claims 0-186 mph in 17 seconds and Ferrari in just 15 seconds.
The 918 Spyder will cost 845000 dollars and only 918 units will be built. Production will start this September.
