The Renault-Nissan Alliance Sold 100,000 Electric Vehicles So Far
|   Thursday, July 25, 2013
Renault and Nissan have taken a serious interest in market dominance, for electric cars at least. The two companies together sold 100,000 vehicles with zero emissions. This performance confirms the advance which the two entities began to see in the field of zero emissions propulsion.

The 100,000 electric cars have traveled about 841 million kilometers together, equivalent to 20,000 times the earth diameter. Also, the vehicles have saved about 53 million liters of fuel and 124 million kilograms of CO2.

The electric performer of the Alliance is by far the current Leaf, which also became the best-selling model in the world with zero emissions. There are 71,000 owners who bought the Leaf, 80% of them coming from the yard of another manufacturer. Of the 71,000 units sold, 30,000 were absorbed by the U.S. market, 28,000 went to the market in Japan, and only 12,000 in Europe.

The other member of the Alliance, Renault, relies on a much wider range of vehicles. Nearly 30,000 cars have been sold since the Kangoo ZE electric model has accessed the market in 2011. Currently, Renault dominates the electric vehicle market in Europe with a market share of 61 percent, obtained in countries like Germany, France and Italy.

The best-selling model of Renault is the Twizy, which totaled 11,000 orders since 2011 to the present. Another success seems to be the little Zoe, which has already gathered 5,000 customers from March until now. The Renault ZOE has a range of 210 km (NEDC). The car starts from 13,700 euros in France after the government's 7,000-euro incentive, excluding the battery.

"The age of the mainstream zero-emission vehicle is here," said Renault-Nissan Alliance Chairman and CEO Carlos Ghosn. "We expect demand to keep growing as the charging infrastructure develops – and we remain 100% committed to zero-emission technology for the long term."
Renault-Nissan have sold more zero-emission cars than all the other major carmakers combined. In the U.S., the LEAF is found in the top 10 vehicles sold in San Francisco, Seattle and Honolulu.

In Norway, the LEAF is one of the top 10 vehicles sold countrywide. The model is Nissan's best selling car in Norway, where over 4,600 people have bought LEAFs since 2011. Electric Vehicles in Norway are exempt from value added tax (VAT) and road tolls, and they have access to bus lanes and free parking.

The first electric vehicle sold by the Alliance, was a Nissan Leaf bought by Olivier Chalouhi, an engineer in California in December 2010. Electric vehicle number 100,000 is still a Leaf, purchased by a student just off the banks of a university in Atlanta.

Plug-in cars store energy in a lithium-ion battery that satisfies all safety and environmental standards wherever they are sold. The vehicles can be partially charged at any charge point, or they can be fully recharged overnight from a driver's home, or garage.

In order to hasten the acceptance of electric vehicles all over the world, the Renault-Nissan Alliance is collaborating with government authorities, utility companies and many others to build a network of charging stations that will allow drivers to recharge their cars from zero to 80 percent capacity in just under 30 minutes.
