The Renault-Nissan Alliance And Mitsubishi Will Collaborate To Launch Future Models
|   Sunday, November 10, 2013
Mitsubishi will shake hands with the Renault-Nissan Alliance for a broad partnership that will involve the development of common models based on the same platform.

Mitsubishi and Nissan work together since 2011. The two companies have jointly developed two compact models, the Nissan Dayz and Mitsubishi eK Wagon, only for the Japanese market. Because things went well and the two companies have a successful project, the partnership will be extended to the Renault-Nissan Alliance.

A statement on the deal's terms said: "As a consequence, it has been agreed that the strategic cooperation between Nissan and Mitsubishi Motors could be expanded across the broader Renault-Nissan Alliance."

The collaboration will include the joint use of several technologies as well as assembly plants. Also, Mitsubishi and Nissan will develop a small car project, based on the Kei platform and on the two models mentioned above and sold only in Japan.

The small class car will have a global destination and will be offered in electric version too. The two conglomerates will share new generation platforms and technologies for the development of electric vehicles.

"Based on the current direction of discussions between Renault and Mitsubishi Motors, it is firstly expected that two new sedan models would be launched under the Mitsubishi brand, based on vehicles from the Renault portfolio," said officials in a statement. Additional studies concerning other projects will also be considered.

Therefore, in the near future, Mitsubishi will launch 2 new sedans, based on Renault platforms, which ones exactly still being under discussion. One of them will be compact and will be intended for United States and Canada markets (it will likely be made in a Renault-Samsung factory at Busan in South Korea), and the other will be a small sedan with a worldwide coverage (where it will be made is unclear).

The Renault-Nissan alliance is a strategic partnership that started in 1999 between the French at Renault and Japan's no. 2 carmaker Nissan. The alliance also has numerous collaborations other automakers, like China's Dongfeng or Germany's Daimler, as well as with regional builders such as Ashok Leyland in India.
"Nissan and Mitsubishi Motors have jointly benefited from several collaborations in the past, most recently the successful joint-venture on Kei cars in Japan. I welcome the direction being taken towards this broader cooperation, creating new opportunities for Renault in addition to further leveraging the productive relationship between Nissan and Mitsubishi Motors," stated Carlos Ghosn, President and CEO of the Renault-Nissan Alliance.

Osamu Masuko, President of Mitsubishi Motors Corporation: "As a result of the development of collaborative projects with Nissan Motor up to now, Mitsubishi Motors is pleased to work again with Nissan and now Renault towards achieving further collaborations. The new opportunities could be described as evidence that the ongoing collaborative projects between Mitsubishi Motors and Nissan have brought positive results, and Mitsubishi Motors hopes that any new collaborative projects with the Renault-Nissan Alliance would bring us further merits."
