The Queer Twizy Renault Sport F1 Concept
|   Thursday, May 02, 2013
The load of wacky concepts dumped on us every year is a source of inspiration, laughter and bafflement. WE are not yet sure in which of these categories the Renault Twizy Renault Sport F1 Concept falls into. But regardless of whether it is madness or a stroke of genius, this is concept car that needs our attention.

Hailing from the base Renault Twizy, the concept aims to bring Formula 1 performances to the small 2-seater. In its standard configuration, the Twizy is powered by a 17 horsepower electric motor and has a top speed of 53 mph.
Its semi-open cabin and overall design are also very interesting, and the car itself appears to be loads of fun to drive. So, if the base model is this good, why not make it better?

So, the F1 department took over and used its know-how and experience in the world of racing to bring something over to the Twizy that will make it the slightly weird cousin of a true F1 car. So far, everything makes a lot of sense, right?

So, the overhauled Twizy has received a few elements that would normally go into a race car. Thus we have the rolling stock from a Formula Renault 2.0 race car, a front splitter, carbon-fiber side pods, plus a rear diffuser. Moreover, an F1-styled rain light is placed low in the rear bumper, and all the exterior lighting has switched to use LEDs.

The company claims that all this mixing of technologies will result in this super golf cart having "the appearance of a beast that is about to pounce yet which is still fun to drive." Note that that there is no sarcasm attached to the term super golf cart; they are wonderful machines.

As far as the engine goes, the same 17 horsepower electric motor is used, but a KERS system has been added to the mix. This is the same system found in the Lotus E21 F1 racer. Also, another motor, a second one, was added. This improvement will give the Twizy a 14 second limited power boost of 80 horses. For a car this size to develop 97 horsepower, the thrill must be off this planet.

To make this possible the rev limit has been increased to 10,000 rpm, which is very good for something of this size, but pales in comparison to the 36,000 rpm the true KERS motor can reach. That's to the excellent power to weight ratio, and the instant torque provided by the electric motor, the Twizy Renault Sport F1 Concept can go from 0 to 62 mph in just 6 seconds, just like the Megane RS. The top speed is upped from 53 to 68 mph. For something that doesn't have doors, that speed seems reasonable.

As a piece of trivia, it seems the whole idea behind this concept was someone jokingly asking "Why not fit Twizy with KERS?" Why not, indeed. Thankfully, they did fit the Twizy with KERS and the result is this awesome machine.
