The PSG Glow Plugs - One Solution For Cold Starting Diesel Engines
|   Sunday, October 20, 2013
The cold season is synonymous with a cumbersome start of the car from the parking lot. This phenomenon happens especially in diesel engines, more sluggish when the temperature drops below 0 degrees Celsius. All these situations have to do more or less, with the ignition.

To make a diesel engine cylinder go into operation at -20 degrees Celsius, it takes great technological efforts. But here is a solution.
The PSG glow plugs are not just ultra-efficient, but are also some precise measuring instruments because permanent adjustment of injection makes it possible to get higher pressure peaks and lower emissions at startup.
Built-in sensors measures the pressure in the combustion chamber of each cylinder, when the pressure is changing rapidly and cyclically and continuously report these values to the engine control unit (ECU).

With this continuous feedback, turbocharging pressure and the ratio of exhaust gas recirculation can be optimally adjusted to the fuel injection. The result is a lower fuel consumption and significantly reduced fine particle emissions. Precisely these traits have made them to be used by the famous auto brands like BMW or Mercedes. Moreover, the spark plugs manufactured by Beru equip the models of the Volkswagen Group produced on the modular platform MQB.

The technology with pressure sensor glow plugs will be needed to help automakers respect Euro 6 emissions standards since the end of 2014. So far, Beru produced 3 million PSG spark plugs, and by 2016 the supplier aims to produce 10 million units.

Right now, Beru Systems is part of the Federal Mogul conglomerate. They bought the aftermarket parts division from BorgWarner back in 2012. Federal Mogul has in its portfolio other auto parts brands, of which the best known are Ferodo and Wagner, both suppliers of brake pads.

"BorgWarner's award-winning pressure sensor glow plug technology demonstrates how optimizing the combustion process can not only improve performance but reduce emissions," Brady Ericson, President and General Manager of BorgWarner BERU Systems stated. "With stringent new emissions standards on the horizon, we expect demand to grow significantly among global original equipment automakers."

Made with a robust steel heating rod plus a piezo-resistive sensor, BorgWarner's PSG enhances engine efficiency to its max abilities. It reliable starts in cold temperatures, offers improved fuel economy and lower NOx emissions and optimum torque control.

This technology has received a few awards too, like the 2009 Automotive News PACE Award, the 2008 Eureka Lillehammer Award and the 2006 Automechanika Innovation Award among others.

Beru has tested various methods to send signals from the combustion chamber to the engine control. The cylinder pressure measurement turned out the best way to do that. Along with Texas Instruments Holland B.V., they developed a combustion chamber pressure sensor on piezo-resistive basis which goes into the glow plug.

Beru AG therefore presents an innovative glow plug with combustion chamber pressure sensor which possibly represents a key function for exploring further potential for emission reduction in the diesel engine and therefore holds great promise from the future.
