The Porsche 918 Spyder is finally set to debut this year
|   Monday, July 02, 2012
Originally unveiled at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show as a concept, the Porsche 918 Spyder initially grabbed eyeballs for its intimidating design, body work and specifications. It is finally ready for the market and has already been showcased at Good Wood, UK.

The monster Spyder is powered by a mammoth V8 hybrid engine producing 770 HP combined. The car runs off the electric motor at lower revs and at high speeds, the petrol engine cuts in automatically.
You could also change the drive train to run both the motors together to extract the maximum juice out of the engine.

The Porsche 918 Spyder has attracted a lot of attention at the Good Wood Speed Week and Porsche would like to hope that any publicity is good publicity, at least for the moment. The reaction has been overwhelming for the time being, with more and more people queuing up to make inquiries about the Spyder.

The makers of the Spyder had actually got the "go ahead" back in 2010, when Porsche fans had showed great interest in the model. The Good Wood Speed Week has finally showed the world what Porsche is capable of producing.

Due to the presence of the hybrid engine, the 918 Spyder is highly economical. Fuel consumption is around 100km per 3 liters. The petrol engine produces 500 HP and the two electric ones produce close to 218 HP combined.

The 918 Spyder has the traits of the Porsche Carrera GT and the 917 race car and has also been influenced by the RS Spyder. The designing similarities are obvious but there is nothing to complain about as the car looks great.

However, the Spyder will have a manually removable hard top cover stored in the front boot space of the vehicle. This is done to assist sales. The 918 has been designed by the record setting plug in hybrid technology originated by Porsche.

The mid engine design of the Spyder is inspired from the Audi Quattro, the Le Mans veteran car. This helps transfer maximum power to the rear wheels of this rear wheel drive vehicle. This helps the car gain speed and control at high speeds.

The power transmission to the rear wheels is done by a 7 speed Porsche PDK – Porsche-Doppelkupplungsgetriebe - transmission. This technology allows all wheel drive in times of emergency, but the overall design allows it to function as a rear wheel drive vehicle.

The prototypes of the 918 Spyder are undergoing test trials at the speedway as of yet, but Porsche aims to manufacture the Spyder as soon as possible. The 918 Spyder is set to offer a model made of carbon fiber exterior, this is set to become one of the fastest cars in the world.
The first generation 918 Spyder is currently under production at the German automaker's assembling plant at Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen, Germany. The first lot is however made for only left hand driving experience.

The car is set to launch in November 2013 and the bookings have opened for the first delivery. The car is priced at around 645,000 Euro.
