The Paris Motor Show: Some Of The Stars
|   Friday, October 05, 2012
At the Paris Motor Show, which will continue until the 14th of October, a lot of new model have been launched, all of which have the potential to heavily impact the auto industry.

The Concept Active Tourer from BMW, among others, represents one of the biggest moves to front-wheel drive, in order to save weight and make better use of space. Also, this new model has a smaller footprint than BMW's present bestseller, the 3 Series. A newly developed 3 cylinder gasoline engine powers the front wheels, while an electric motor moves the rear wheels.
Total output is at around 190 horsepower. It can be plugged into a conventional power source to recharge the lithium-ion battery pack. When full, it allows an electric-only range of 18.6 miles.

Jaguar managed to please the sports car fans this year. The F-Type is a tad smaller and also lighter compared to the British automaker's current XK. But in spite of all of Jaguar's efforts to keep the car slim, the lightest version, which brings us 340 horsepower from a supercharged V6, still comes in at 3,521 lbs. Porsche, for example, is doing a better job in this department: the new Jaguar is 478 lbs heavier than a Porsche Boxster and 280 lbs heavier compared to a Porsche 911 Cabriolet.

Costing 94,930 dollars in Germany, it occupies a place right between those two models, which is quite interesting. The basic F-Type comes with a V6 engine, but there is also an F-Type S, using the same engine but tuned to give off 380 horsepower. The range topper will be the F-Type V8 S, with a 495 horsepower supercharged V8, ready to make 0 to 62 mph in 4.2 seconds. All 3 versions have an eight speed automatic that also has a manual mode. Expect them next spring.

The all new 2013 Range Rover will be coming this December, and weighs nearly 700 lbs less than the ongoing model. The body structure, made entirely of aluminum of which 75 percent is recycled, is responsible for 408 of the lost lbs. It is 39 percent lighter compared to the steel structure currently used on the Range Rover.

McLaren is a company renowned for the building of highly expensive Formula One race cars for decades. The road cars it builds come through a new subsidiary McLaren Automotive from which we got the MP4-12C at first. The performance of that 592 horse supercar, making 0 to 62 mph in 3.3 seconds, will look dull in comparison to the new stuff. The P1 will have well over 600 horses, but the real star in that performance will be the amount of aerodynamic downforce it generates to better grip the road, more than 1,300 lbs.

Lastly, we have the SLS AMG Coupe Electric Drive, a pure electric supercar with almost the same performance as the gas-powered SLS AMG. It uses 4 electric motors, one for each wheel, ggving 4 wheel drive a new meaning. The SLS Coupe Electric Drive will race from 0 to 62 mph in 3.9 seconds, just 0.1 seconds below the regular model. Top speed is however limited to 155 mph, while the gas-powered SLS AMG reaches 197 mph.
