The Next Generation BMW X5 Taken for a Spin
|   Thursday, October 31, 2013
Before the launch of the BMW X5, there was nothing sporty about general SUVs. This vehicle brought in drive pleasure with it, a few decades back. Mercedes Benz was not far behind and launched its precision SUV – the M Class. This vehicle is based on a monocoque chassis designed back in 1999. Major design modifications have been made to both these vehicles since, to keep it up to date.

BMW has designed this vehicle to be an urban SUV, off road capabilities have been kept in mind although it is not an extensive off roader such as a Land Rover.
However, ample cabin space, four wheel drive train and imperious seating arrangement restore the prestige of this vehicle. BMW has achieved fair amount of success with this vehicle world wide. Its X5 is one of the best selling vehicles of all time.

The refinement, drive pleasure, smooth ride appeal and muscular yet suave external design, gives this vehicle an added edge in class. BMW has made quite a few modifications to its vehicle over the years and its final product is very much an all round SUV. Transition from the old to a new model was however not always smooth and decision to update an already refined model received high criticism.

This was also BMW's greatest challenge, which the engineering and designing department decided to take head on. Reducing the cabin noise levels via the front bulkhead was a tough job while advanced suspension and damper controls smoothen out ride comfort. Subtle improvements have been made to its exterior such as additional air vents, dash board and cabin modifications, leather upholstery and aluminum and wood finish.

The BMW X5 was posh before and these modifications have enhanced these aspects of this vehicle. BMW's X5 redefines sophistication and luxury although a few modified switch gear undermines complete refinement. BMW has taken great care to finish what they have started and attention has been paid to details. Rear seats have been overhauled while its new ones are more comfortable than before.

BMW currently plans on offering six engine variants of this vehicle along with a two wheel drive train. We expect rear wheel drive on this SUV but lack of official confirmation is a reason to reconfirm. Although frugal engine options are available, BMW is also offering high end fuel consuming diesel engines, even though they may not seem an interesting proposition considering current market condition. However, for people travelling off road, a large engine is a must. Therefore BMW is keeping these engines as options. A range of low rev engines keep mass markets going and this is an important feature considering BMW's claims of its X5 being an urban ride.

Even though its predecessor was refined, the latest vehicle holds its edge owing to inclusion of latest technology. Handling is the same, if not better while throttle response and body control is enhanced. Muscularity is not what BMW stands for, even as their latest vehicle does sport a hint of muscularity.
