The New Volvo Super Truck - 70% More Fuel Efficient Than a Conventional Truck!
|   Sunday, November 06, 2016
Volvo Trucks USA decided to create a truck that is 50 percent more efficient compared to the current models sold in the United States. After 5 years of research, engineers revealed the new Volvo SuperTruck Concept, which exceeded all expectations, indicating a 70 percent better fuel efficiency, leading to a fuel consumption of 18.1 l / 100 km!

“We looked at it as a knowledge accelerator,” said Göran Nyberg, president of Volvo Trucks North America.
“It's a milestone in our history.”
To achieve these results, the engineers have improved the aerodynamics of the truck and trailer by 40 percent, due to the aerodynamic cabins and eliminating mirrors which were replaced by video cameras, as well as Wave Piston technologies.

Wave Piston technologies direct the injected fuel-air mixture back toward the center of the combustion chamber thus giving rise to a cleaner and more complete burn process.

Another important aspect was to reduce the weight by 1,451 kilograms thanks to the frame made entirely of aluminum (only the bolts are from steel), which is almost twice as light compared to the conventional frame made only of steel, while the outer elements have been made of composite materials, including carbon fiber.

Instead of the D13 engine, under the hood of the concept truck a more compact unit has been installed, a D11 with a displacement of 11 liters, 6 cylinders in line (425 hp) which received special pistons, common rail direct injection and a number of innovations which have increased the thermal efficiency from 42 percent to 50 percent.

For the comfort of the trucker, on the roof solar panels have been installed which supply energy for the LED interior lighting. Also on the roof is a hot air extractor from the interior to provide comfort and optimum temperature inside.
At the same time a climate control system was introduced which can work in a “hotel” regime for 14 hours (when the driver rests) without using the engine!
During the day, the two alternators charge the batteries during acceleration, braking, and going down slopes, so the energy is sufficient for climate control from without actually using any fuel.

However, the works on the Volvo SuperTruck project do not stop there. The specialists from Volvo will continue to work on new ideas and promise a future SuperTruck II, partially implementing the project’s ideas on the truck production from the VNL series.

U.S. Secretary of Energy Ernest Moniz saw the Volvo SuperTruck outside the department's HQ and even elaborated on that specific point. “I think a big part of it is going to be to keep working on the engineering to get the costs down so that these efficient trucks become the standard in the United States and frankly, in the global market,” he stated after acknowledging the ongoing efforts for the SuperTruck II.

Regarding the global scale of things, Moniz pointed out heavy pollution issues in countries like China and India and said that improving freighter efficiency might actually help there too. “We are doing this to accelerate the introduction of these technologies,” he said. “Time is important for us in terms of fuel economy and carbon emissions.”
