The New Mini Will Be Launched On November 18
|   Thursday, August 08, 2013
A third-generation Mini produced under the tutelage of BMW will debut on November 18, a day with special significance for the British seeing that on the same day, 107 years since the birth of Sir Alexander Arnold Constantine Issigonis, the company founder, are also celebrated. The premiere will take place in the cradle of Mini's factory in Oxford, United Kingdom.

Mini is preparing to launch the new generation of its hatchback. It will be exhibited simultaneously at the Tokyo Motor Show and Los Angeles Auto Show, but the premiere will take place at the company's headquarters in Oxford to celebrate 107 years since the birth of the founder of the brand.
We are talking about Sir Alexander Arnold Constantine Issigonis, an engineer who developed from zero the first Mini built by the British Motor Corporation. The Greek-British engineer was known for his skill at developing revolutionary technical solutions that have been integrated into models produced by several British brands, including Austin, Morris, MG and Humber.

The three-door hatchback will be only the first of 11 versions of to be launched by Mini, based on the new modular platform UKL1, used by BMW future models with front-wheel drive.

In general, the future model will take on the lines established by its predecessors. Velvet Revolution will bring new prominent headlamps, with LED technology, a more generous scale, and a somewhat steeper tailgate.
For these models versions, diesel or petrol, 1.5 liters units, rated between 120 and 190 horses, will be available. To the top models, the Cooper S and JCW, displacement will be increased to 1.6 liters, a technical solution that will lead to approximately 280 hp maximum power.

The interior will bring some new ergonomic solutions too. The speedometer and engine revolutions counter are digital only and will be placed behind the steering wheel. The grand central display, now tradition, will take only entertainment and navigation functions and make them accessible via the new Driving Experience Control, a controller inspired by the famous iDrive from the BMW.

As well as handling AWD, the UKL1 will offer at least one type of hybrid drivetrain. It is currently unclear if a battery version of the new Mini will make it to series production. BMW has already displayed an extended-range electric drivetrain for a front-drive car, while a senior BMW engineer has spoke with Britain's Autocar, saying that that he believes an extended-range drivetrain is a better investment than a pure battery-powered car.

UKL1 will likewise be used as the foundation for a new range of compact Bavarian models. Here we have three-door as well as five-door hatches, a super-compact SUV and a tall 5-series GT-style car. With 10 Mini models being planned for the future and as many as 5 BMW models, the UKL1 will soon become BMW's largest selling vehicle range.

When BMW CEO Norbert Reithofer first announced plans for a range of front-drive cars back in March 2010, he claimed the new platform would allow BMW to "achieve its profitability aims in the small car sector". It is believed that Mini's production of 240,000 cars per year was not sufficient to justify the expense of creating a stand-alone Mini platform.
