The New Mercedes E-Class Coupe Sets Course for Detroit
|   Monday, November 28, 2016
The new Mercedes E-Class Coupe, codenamed C208, will be revealed in January 2017 at the Detroit Auto Show.
The E-Class family increases with the Mercedes E-Class Coupe and Cabrio, expected to join the revised range in the spring of 2017. The MRA Mercedes modular platform, which is already the basis for the C- and S-Class, will be the starting point for the new E-Class Coupe. The new GT with four seats will have a unique wheelbase and increased track gauges, being built largely from lightweight materials such as aluminum to become more rigid and more efficient.

The range of engines will mimic the known one for the four-door model, which means that the Mercedes E-Class Coupe 2017 will receive the modular units with four or six cylinders, made of several identical 0.5 liter cylinders. In the foreground will be the L4 diesel engine with a displacement of 2.0 liters, available in versions rated at 150 hp and 195 hp.
As far as novelties go, there will be a six-cylinder in-line turbo engine with a displacement of 3 liters, with particulate filter and 48V electrical system which will develop up to 408 hp.

At the same time, this engine will be accompanied by a new family of diesel engines with the same L6 configuration with a displacement of 3 liters and a maximum peak power estimated at 313 horsepower. At the top of the range, the Mercedes-AMG 63 will provide up to 612 hp thanks to its AMG V8 twin-turbo engine with a displacement of 4.0 liters, also used on the GT model too.

In terms of interior design, the new E-Class Coupe will be inspired by its big brother S-Class Coupe. The same round air outlets will decorate the center of the dashboard, along with the same board configuration with dual 12.3-inch screens, which is also found on the E-Class sedan. The new fifth-generation Comand system will waive the rotary controller in favor of a touchpad, which means you can access the main functions via simple swipe movements (slide your fingers).

Autonomous technology will also be at the forefront of the marketing movement, and will join the new E-Class Coupe with a range of advanced systems that mimic those offered on the E-Class sedan, including the spectacular system which automatically maintains the lane and distance from the car in front, with active intervention on the steering and brakes respectively, as well as the automatic parking feature.

It seems that prices will rise compared to current generation, a logical decision taken following the relocation of the new Mercedes E-Class Coupe in a higher class, for a clearer delineation compared to the C-Class Coupe. The new model will make its debut in Detroit and the first orders will be honored next spring. Subsequently, 2017 will see the release of the new E-Class Cabriolet too.

“We’re progressing the design of our production cars to a new phase. It still adheres to the basic principles evident in more recent models, but it is much cleaner and more timeless in appeal,” said Gorden Wagener, the German car maker’s design chief regarding the new model.
