The New Generation Mini Will Be Produced In The Netherlands
|   Sunday, March 03, 2013
The guys at BMW are investing 82 million euros in expanding and upgrading the NedCar plant. Located in the Netherlands, in Born, the factory was taken over last year from Mitsubishi for the symbolic sum of one euro.

The Japanese company wanted to get rid of this unit from Born, which belonged to it entirely since 2001. The factory includes 1,500 employees and has a maximum production capacity of 210,000 cars. Initially it had manufactured cars with the Swedes from Volvo, and then with the German group Daimler (Smart).
Currently it is assembling the old Cold model, the newer one being made in India.

The Mitsubishi President stated the condition to sell the plant for one euro: the future owner is to keep the staff. It will be the first time that the Mini will be built outside the United Kingdom since the brand belongs to the BMW group. Historically, the old Mini was assembled in Italy or Chile.

According to the Dutch magazine AutoWeek, the German manufacturer will relocate here part of the production of next Mini, expected on the market in 2014. There is no official information about possible body versions produced in the Netherlands, but most likely the BMW will assemble the new version with five doors of the third generation in Born.

Among the new body styles belonging to the extended family there is the first five door MINI in history and the series version of the Rocketman concept. Closer to its Mini Morris ancestors' petite proportions, it will be a direct competitor for future Smart ForTwo. The launch of the third generation of the modern Mimi will continue to expand the British pedigree model range to levels unknown before.

The Mini's future will be based on the new modular platform with front-wheel drive of the BMW group and will be offered in the select company of a family of new three-cylinder engines.

The technical architecture that will be used is the same as new BMW models with front wheel drive. The first exponent of this range will be the future 1 Series GT, foreshadowed the last year in Paris, by the Active Tourer concept.

Compared to the initial estimates made at the end of last year, right after after taking NedCar, the BMW Group investments, in new production location, will increase by 8 million euros. The main beneficiary of this supplementation will be paint and body department, and the necessary funds will be injected directly from the German manufacturer and not the local partner VDL Groep, the official owner of the factory.

Harald Krueger, member of the board of management at Munich-based parent firm BMW Group, said: "A year ago we announced a further investment of 500 million pounds in our United Kingdom production network by 2014 and today we are announcing an additional 250 million pounds, taking us through to 2015. This brings the total to 1.75 billion pounds since 2000. Over the last 11 years, Mini has been a unique global success and the BMW Group has even greater plans for the future development of the brand."
