The New 2016 Opel Astra Comes With LED Headlights

The intelligent lighting system of the future will debut on the new generation Opel Astra at the Frankfurt International Motor Show (September 17 to 27).
With the new Astra, the revolutionary LED matrix lighting system, which allows driving with a high beam anti-dazzle function, will become available for the first time in the compact class, making the latest lighting technology accessible to the general public. After launching the bi-xenon adaptive lighting system, with the current Astra generation, those at Opel once again assume a pioneering role in the field of lighting technology with the best-selling vehicle in the compact class.

After years of preparation, the new lighting system complete with LEDs, patented by the folks at Opel, IntelliLux, is now ready to go into production. So far, this system has been reserved for luxury class vehicles. Opel will launch this system on the new generation Astra, which will premiere at the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt in September. This has been possible thanks to intelligent solutions and the latest LED generation that provides lighting almost as bright as during the day.

Comprised of 16 LED segments - eight on each side of the car - the new LED matrix system adapts automatically and continuously the length and distribution of the light beam at every traffic situation. Meanwhile, communicating with the front Opel Eye camera which, for example, detects other moving vehicles so individual LED segments that could blind drivers moving in the opposite direction are turned on or off automatically.

As soon as the vehicle comes out of urban areas, the main beam is automatically activated and remains on continuously. This leads to a considerable increase in the level of safety, as confirmed by the study of the Technical University of Darmstadt and the European initiative LightSightSafety. The study shows that driving at a speed of 80 km/h the drivers detect roadside objects around 30 - 40 meters faster than using conventional halogen or xenon lighting systems. This gives a reaction time of about 1.5 seconds longer, for example, when animals are suddenly crossing the road.

The IntelliLux on the Astra's equipment will be the first matrix lighting system which is continuously optimized in a production car without being connected to the navigation system. Besides the numerous automatic high beam - low beam combination variants, the IntelliLux LED system also provides a special method for highway lighting, which further enhances safety at night. Also, a special feature called welcome lighting makes entering and exiting the Astra model more comfortable in the dark.

The improved LED matrix efficiency lighting system brings added safety and comfort too. The system not only illuminates the surrounding areas better than conventional lighting systems, but also has a significantly longer lifespan than halogen or xenon lamps.
Another advantage is that the mechanical movements are no longer needed at the lighthouse level - individual LED segments are switched on and off depending on the situation, which also contributes to durability, which goes well beyond the life span of the vehicle itself.
