The New 2013 Seat Leon Unveiled
|   Wednesday, July 18, 2012
The 3rd gen of the Seat Leon model has been revealed in a 5-door version. Soon to follow will be the sportier 3-door variant and practical estate. The company is obviously trying to emulate the success the Ibiza had by offering 3 versions to choose from.

Britain's Autocar got its hands first on the shots showing the 5-door model. According to them, Seat's owner, Volkswagen has big plans for the Spanish brand. The first one will be the ending of Seat's philosophy thus far; no more will the brand have one model that does everything.
Differentiation will finally reach Spanish shores.

The car is the first to bear the company's newly restyled S badge, in addition to being the first carin the segment to offer LED headlamps. Its official debut will take place a few months from now at the Paris Auto Show. The French auto exposition will only see the 5-door version, with the other 2 having their launch date pushed to somewhere in 2013. On the other hand, patience is rewarded and at the Frankfurt Auto Show next year we will be able to see all 3 models.

From VW point of view, this is the second model to use its MQB platform, while from Seat's standing it is the first production car to incorporate its new design language. If you recall, the past 3 years a number of concept cars were revealed, the IBE, IBX, IBL.

The new Leon measures 4263 mm in length, 1816 mm in width, and 1459 mm in height, with the wheelbase occupying 2636 mm. The use of the MQB platform has brought about many advantages, among which we find weight savings. Compared to the ongoing model (weighing about 1250 kg in its most basic form), about 85 kg have been saved.

The car will get to choose from 4 diesel engines and 5 gasoline ones. In the latter category we have a 1.2 TSI with either 85 horses or 104 horses and a 1.8 TSI with 178 horses. A 1.4 TSI with either 120 horses or 138 horses will also be on offer; the 138 horsepower version will have Active Cylinder Technology.

Diesel lovers will see a 1.6 TDI with either 89 horses or 104 horses, and a 2.0 TDI engine offered in 148 horses or 181 horses. Just like the current model the Ecomotive, FR and Cupra sub-brands will feature in the Leon lineup. Supposedly, the 1.6 TDI will be able to deliver 73.4 mpg and have carbon dioxide emission levels of just 99 g/km.
A 5 or 6 speed manual box will be offered, alongside with a 6 or 7 speed dual clutch gearbox.

Having learned from past mistakes, or so it claims, the company will give the cabins a more premium feel. A wide range of Alcantara and leather trim will be put on the high end units, and improvements in the quality of materials and finish are also being targeted.
Looking forward to see how people will react when they get their hand on the 3rd gen Seat Leon.
