The Mercedes-Benz C-Class Will Have A 70 kilograms Lighter Chassis
|   Saturday, November 02, 2013
Mercedes-Benz presented the first images of the C-Class W205 chassis. The new generation of the mid-range model has a 70 kg lighter chassis than the current C-Class and will debut in 2014.

This model will have a body that will combine steel with aluminum, and will boast a high torsional rigidity, will be lightweight compared to its predecessor, and provide a better behavior in case of accident.

Crumple zones were developed after complex simulations which have used advanced software.
The bodywork of the C-Class is not the only change with the onset of the generation W205. The model will receive a new suspension and a new interior which departs from the philosophy launch of its predecessors.

The new generation of the C-Class will have premium facilities, according to the English from Autocar. The model will be offered with a pneumatic suspension system, radar sensors with 360 degree coverage, front and rear stereo cameras, air conditioning system which performs filtering and air ionization functions, and HUD display (Heads-up displays - transparent displays that let drivers see data without looking down) on the windshield.

The multimedia system is controlled via touchscreen interface mounted on the center console, being able to make the differences between the times when the system is used to control systems, or used by the driver in order to rest his wrist.

The platform of the W205 has an impressive structure. This was achieved by pressing the 13 different configurations of steel, ensuring a higher degree of stiffness while keeping only 60 percent of the total mass. Some body compounds have been simplified and old barriers were removed between aluminum and steel in places in which the corrosion could appear. Overall, the body of the C-Class is made out of 24 percent aluminum.

The a new lightweight body structure with the newly developed aluminum hybrid construction process gets rid of as much as 100 kg (220 pounds) compared to the current model and depending on the engine used. A lighter weight is claimed to have a 20 percent fuel consumption drop on some models without any power loss.

Besides the significantly different construction process, the 4th generation C-Class also uses a freshly developed chassis made of a new 4-link front and 5-link rear suspension. This is supposed to provide what Mercedes calls "unsurpassed wheel location qualities," "supreme straight line stability" and "outstanding NVH (noise, vibration, harshness) qualities."

This new chassis uses a higher number of aluminum components, shaving 2 kg (4.4 pounds) of the front alone. It will also arrive with the choice of 3 tuning options: Comfort, Direct Control and Sport, the latter of receiving a 15.24 mm (0.6 inches) reduction in ride height.

Thanks to the new setup the driver will be able0 to choose between Comfort, ECO, and Sport modes varying the firmness of the dampers. This also offers a self-leveling feature that automatically lowers the car on the highway for better aerodynamics and increased fuel economy.
