The Lincoln Navigator is the Ford Motor's full-size SUV specified for luxury only in the Sports Utility Vehicle category. It is built on the platform of the Ford Expedition which was introduced in the year 1996. The Navigator started production in May 14th, 1997 and it was launched in the market for sale around August 1997. The Navigator can easily carry up to eight full sized people.

In the first year of production the Navigator sold around 44 thousand in the U.
. is becoming one of the popular luxury SUVs. The Navigator found itself famous within the celebrities and the customized cars sectors. The Navigator's main rival the GMC Denali and GM's Cadillac Escalade also hook up with the success of the Navigator.

The first generation Navigator was introduced around August 1997 and it continued until 2002. The first model was of two types. There was a four wheel drive model and a two wheel drive model. The car was of 5200mm long, 2030mm width and 1948mm of height. It had a wheelbase of 3020mm. Equipped with a 5.4L V8 engine and a 6-speed automatic gearbox the Navigator achieves 0-60mph within 10.3 seconds.

In 2003 the Navigator was redesigned and the second generation was introduced. Most of the dimensions were same and there was no performance upgrade. The only changes were the exterior looks and the interior. The New exterior contained new brighter headlight, chrome door handles and new improved waterfall grille.

Then in 2007 the third generation came to market with a few better adjustments. A new Navigator L model was also introduced with larger wheelbase. The Engine and gears were not changed. The new Lincoln Navigator and Navigator L have been given a better look with great luxury and comfort.

Now Lincoln is about to replace the old V8 engine with a 3.5L V6 engine. Lincoln's director Matt VanDyke announced the news. From now on the Navigator will be equipped with an eco-boost 3.5L twin-turbo V6 engine. Ford announced the new engine will be much fuel efficient and increase in horse power. The Navigator and the Expedition both will use the V6.

Lincoln Navigator sales were down for the past few years and this is mainly attributed to the low fuel efficiency of the vehicle. Considering the tough times, Lincoln has made a wise decision. This move is expected to improve Lincoln's market share in parts of Europe and China apart from the American market.

Although the V8 engine is being replaced by the V6, performance will not be affected a lot due to the optimum tuning made to this engine. Therefore, while the vehicle will be enjoying tax benefits at one end, it will be cheaper to run on the other. This makes the new Navigator an exceptional ride from all directions. Lincoln has not announced a specific launch date as of yet although it is expected to be available in markets by mid 2014.
