The Limousine of President Obama Weighs 6.8 Tons And Costs 1.5 Million Dollars

President Obama appeared many times onboard his Cadillac limo, designed specifically by GM. The car weighs 6,800 kilograms, providing unprecedented armor and protection systems worthy of James Bond films.

President Obama's limo, the Beast, was launched on the road three years ago. It was built by General Motors at its center research and development in Detroit. While wearing the emblem of Cadillac, the limousine was built from zero to cope with security requirements.

So far, GM produced 12 limousines, all armored. Armor is not normal either. The armor consists of materials leading up to 20 centimeters thick doors, and windows up to 12 centimeters. This makes it difficult to open the door from the inside. The gas tank was also armored and has special foam that stops fires.

The cabin can be fully isolated from the outside. Beyond the armored door, there is a fire extinguishing system. There is also a hermetically sealed passenger compartment in the event of a gas attack. This equipment is complemented by a satellite phone, an interactive video communication system, and night vision system.

With all these sets of gadgets and protective elements it is not surprising that the presidential limo weighs 6,800 kg. To ensure all these utilities, the propulsion is provided by a powerful gasoline V8 engine that consumes "only" 63.5 liters / 100 kilometers. According to those who drove it, it goes from 0 to 60 mph surprisingly fast.

The estimated price of each presidential limousine is 1.5 million dollars.
Previously, the other presidential limos kept breaking down. All the extras stuff the Secret Service added to the vehicle led to excess weight and stress, far beyond the original operational limits. Thus, the transmissions often failed, "and the brakes would last about two trips," said one veteran agent for Autoweek. "The cars were just too heavy, and they were a terror to drive, and even harder to stop."

Therefore, it was decided to build the car from the ground up instead of modifying existing ones. "The car may say Cadillac, but very little in that car is Cadillac." Truly, it is made General Motors in Detroit and its R&D section, but "even the Cadillac emblems on the hood and trunk are supersized. The car is really a truck that looks like a limo. And it drives like one, too."

The Beast has other features too, like the Kevlar-reinforced Goodyear run-flats tires, armor made of steel, titanium, aluminum and ceramic materials. Secret Service technicians have also experimented with a night-vision camera system in order to drive the car if vision is fully obstructed through the bullet-proof windshield. For that reason, the driver has to spend a full week driving the car at the absolute limits, obviously including simulated tactical emergency situations.
The only thing this thing doesn't have is offensive capabilities supplied by missiles, grenade launchers or any other type of weapons. For that matter, escape pods are also not included.
