The Lamborghini Urus, The Spiritual Successor To The LM002 Legend: Confirmed For 2016
|   Tuesday, March 26, 2013
Rambo Lambo is back! Lamborghini returns after more than two decades in the luxury SUV segment with the almighty Urus. Audi boss Rupert Stadler has confirmed the model's entry in series production starting in 2016.
"Lamborghini has to do it," said Stadler. "Because of the need to dovetail into production cycles, we should see the Urus in 2017." Said Stadler, quoted by Autocar.

In 1986, Lamborghini enters into completely new territory. On the production line of the Sant'Agata Bolognese plant, comes out the LM002 model, the first luxury SUV manufacturer in the history of Italy.
Nicknamed "Rambo Lambo", the exclusive model with 12-cylinder engine, was produced until 1992, counting only 328 units.

From the cessation of production of the LM002, the Italians have stayed away from the world of luxury SUVs, but now Lamborghini makes the courageous comeback, gracing (some would say cursing) us with the new Urus.

The design borrows many aesthetic details of the Aventador supercar, and the the atypical four-door coupe-like high proportions betrays the claims made for the sportiness of the new model. With the imposing gauge, translated into a width of 1.9 meters and a length of 4.99 meters, the Urus is higher than the BMW X6 by more than 11 cm.

The Urus will be developed on the new platform of the MLB Volkswagen Group, intended for the future of the Audi Q7. The boys at Lamborghini will use a mix of high-tech lightweight materials such as aluminum and carbon fiber to achieve a minimized total mass.

The Urus will benefit from the next generation of the advanced and permanent four-wheel drive with Torsen differential and will be equipped with a dual-clutch automatic transmission and air suspension with variable ground clearance.

Finally, Audi CEO Rupert Stadler has confirmed the SUV should get the green light later this year by the masters of the Volkswagen board (which is the parent company of both Audi and Volkswagen). Once the car gets the ok, Lamborghini would take about 3-4 years to develop the product. Therefore, there is a very good chance that we will see the Lamborghini SUV after 2017.

While the officials at Lamborghini are reluctant to disclose the specifications of motorization for the Urus model, the targets specified in the are quite clear: a max output of 600 hp, the lowest level emissions and the best performance in the segment.

Lamborghini's chief design, Filippo Perini said at Geneva that "Lamborghini's main aim is, don't destroy the design, or to improve it. We were thinking about the future, and we think the SUV market is one of the best opportunity for us in the future. This is something that we need to be in present, for the future. My opinion on this is that as designers we need to continue to propose new designs for Lamborghini with our design language".

Volkswagen R&D director, Maurizio Reggiani is very keen on gifting the Urus with a hybrid powertrain. He said "we think hybrid is a perfect fit in a car like the Urus. You have the right storage for the battery and the right packaging for the car. This can be perfectly fitted with the power, brand and our size of car."
