The Influx of Asian Cars in the UK Market
|   Thursday, November 21, 2013
There are now dozens of manufacturers on the market all trying to create the perfect range of vehicles to take on the mantle as the number one across the globe. With the likes of Volkswagen and Porsche from Germany, Chrysler and Dodge in America, Ferrari in Italy and Aston Martin in the UK, there are some big names in the mix and they are all trying to sell in the various major markets across the world.

One of the biggest markets is the UK with more than 28 million cars on the road.
Specialist dealerships have opened across the country to sell particular brands, and many others have opened to sell a specific number of brands, like the Mazda range at T W White & Sons which are one of the most popular manufacturers to have come from Asia into the global market.

In the past few years, Asian cars have gone from being relatively unknown outside countries like Japan and China, to some of the most popular in the world with Mazda, Suzuki, Hyundai and Kia now household names. Back in May this year, Kia – who are originally from South Korea – announced that they wanted to be "one of the top selling brands in the UK new car market over the next decade." The Korean manufacturer, along with Hyundai, both managed to sell in the region of two million vehicles in the UK alone in 2012 and they would be forced to create vehicles that rival the quality and brand satisfaction that go hand-in-hand with the current top sellers in Britain like Audi and BMW.

One of the reasons for that surge in Asian car sales in the UK in particular is the recent recession that has prompted all car owners to consider their options. Before the wallets were tightened, people would head down to their local dealership and invest in a brand new, luxury model from one of the major brands, ignoring the likes of Suzuki and Mazda despite their success in the Asian market. Now funds are significantly tighter, however, the more cost-effective models making their way into UK dealerships are growing in popularity – and also quality it must be said.

The research and development sectors at the likes of Suzuki and Kia have listened to the demands of customers from nations like America and the UK, and adapted their cars accordingly without necessarily adding the price tags of the more established brands in the western world.

Another key factor behind the recent rise in sales of Asian models is their reliability. As mentioned, they were previously ignored by customers in favour of German manufacturers in particular, such as Volkswagen, BMW or Audi because they have always been near the top of the rankings in terms of reliability. In 2013, however, the tide appears to be turning and the likes of Audi have fallen dramatically. With disposable income at a premium, people buying a new car want to be assured that they're getting good value for money and a vehicle that will run and run, seeing a mechanic for essential work such as MOTs and new tyres rather than becoming more acquainted with the repair shop ramp than the owner's driveway.
