The Green Four-Leaf Clover Celebrates 90 Years Alfa Romeo Cars
|   Saturday, June 22, 2013
The four-leaf clover is a big part of Alfa Romeo's history. Strictly speaking, the official story says that thefour-leaf clover was originally used by the Italian driver Ugo Sivocci in 1923. It is said that the pilot Sivocci was extremely unlucky, and a subscriber to the second place. Joining the 1923 edition of the famous Targa Florio race, Ugo Sivocci draw on his Alfa Romeo RL a green four leaf clover on a white square. Lucky or not, superstition or not, Sivocci managed to win the race the Targa Florio race in 1923.

Interestingly, Sivocci would die in a car accident on the track at Monza a few months later. The car he was driving when that happened, an Alfa Romeo P1, did not have the green clover drawn on the bodywork. The competition number 17 used of Sivocci had to be withdrawn and was not ever assigned a race car in Italy.
Superstition or not, all Alfa Romeo racing cars wore the logo, the green four leaf clover, since 1923. The square on which it was placed, however, was replaced by a white triangle in memory of the deceased pilot. In 1925, the Alfa Romeo P2, which was painted in the famous red color and the clover placed honorably on the hood, manages to win the World Championship of the car in its inaugural edition.

The Second World War would bring peace over competition tracks for a long time. Alfa Romeo presents to the public a new model which was to become famous in the early '50s: the Tipo 159, or, Alfetta, as would be known. Of course, the clover was present on the body painted again in traditional red. Alfetta was to win the world title in the newly founded Formula 1 World Championship in seasons 1950 and 1951, with Nino Farina and after him, Juan-Manuel Fangio.

Subsequently Alfa has given up on Formula 1, but had to keep the clover symbol to mark the street models with extraordinary performance. For example, in 1963, theAlfa Romeo Giulia TI Super had the symbol painted on the front wings and would be known as the Quadrifoglio Giulia.

In the golden age of DTM, Alfa Romeo decided to spoil the party for the German brand. And it did it very well, with the model 155 V6 TI. Nicola Larini was the star of the team, and Alfa Romeo managed to get 10 wins from 20 races in the 1993 season. For luck, a tiny the green four-leaf clover was drawn on the wings of the car.

Alfa Romeo launched the impressive 8C Competizione model in 2007, marking the return of the Italian brand in the automotive's segment for performance and exclusivity. Of course, that clover could not be missed from this combination.

Today, the green clover is a symbol of the best performing versions of the ranges belonging to the Italian manufacturer of cars. Two models have the honor to wear the side wings so far. These are the Alfa Romeo MiTo 1.4T M-Air 170 HP Quadrifoglio Verde and Alfa Romeo Giulietta 1.8T 235 HP Quadrifoglio Verde. If Alfa Romeo's range will increase in the future, we will certainly see other versions that will display the four-leaf clover.
