The Geneva Motor Show Showcases Some of the Weirdest Rides of the Year
|   Sunday, March 17, 2013
The Geneva Motor Show 2013 showcased some of the weirdest looking cars of the year and the most bizarre news related to the event is that some of the car makers have decided to actually bring the concept models into production as early as 2014. The Volkswagen XL1 is one such weird looking creation. The XL1 runs on a diesel electric hybrid platform that is designed to deliver efficiency.

It may not be the most powerful ride in the segment, but it definitely is the most fuel efficient.
Volkswagen claims that this vehicle can run 127 MPG while featuring a drag coefficient of 0.189 CD. This vehicle is powered by a 47 BHP displacing 800 cc engines along with an electric motor. The vehicle is made out of carbon fiber and weighs just 795 kg. This could be the beginning of the next generation vehicles.

Mitsubishi's CA-MiEV is an urban crossover concept and is based on the I-MiEV urban car. The I-MiEV was the most fuel efficient vehicles in its class when Mitsubishi launched the vehicle a few years back. The battery power has been enhanced since and the vehicle provides more fuel efficiency as a result. The overall weight has been reduced while the general ergonomics have been improved.

The Roding Roadster 23 was first showcased at the Geneva Motor Show in 2012 and the vehicle was back at the same venue this year however with a few modifications. The vehicle now sports a body made out of light weight carbon fiber and aluminum and this enhances the general ergonomics. However, just 23 units are expected to be manufactured and interested people are expected to book the vehicle as soon as possible.

Land Rover has showcased the Defender Electric however the vehicle will not be sent to production as of yet. The vehicle shows great promise in the electric SUV market, but Jaguar Land Rover has its own reasons for the moment. The electric motor powering the vehicle displaces 250 ft lb of torque while the vehicle can run over 50 Miles on electric power alone.

The Mitsubishi GR HEV is another futuristic electric car showcased at Geneva and this could be brought to the mass market within the next few years. Mitsubishi is keen on launching this vehicle. However final tests are being conducted at the moment. The vehicle runs on a diesel hybrid power train and displaces 149 g/km of CO2.

Volkswagen's new ECO Motion is an all-electric vehicle and is perfect for the low emission urban standards. The chassis to gearbox ratio of this vehicle has been adjusted to enhance power supply and delivery and Volkswagen could bring this vehicle up for production quite soon.

The Toyota I-Road is a three wheeler running on electric power and is designed to facilitate urban driving. The battery is charged within three hours and uses plug in as well as regenerative braking to replenish the charge. Active Lean technology is used to balance the car while cornering and this is a new technology which needs to be tested in real world conditions.
