The Future Volvo XC90 Will Offer Independent Direction And 3 Premiere Safety Systems
|   Saturday, July 06, 2013
Volvo has officially announced that the upcoming generation of the XC90, which will be launched in 2014, will have 3 safety systems. These systems will be presented in a world premiere at the endowment a series version, regardless of the segment. The 3 systems are based on a radar system, and cameras, which are equipped on the car. The role of such equipment is to prevent collisions and accidents that occur frequently on the roads because of careless drivers or pedestrians.

The first of systems is an evolution of the pedestrian detector (Pedestrian Detection) package that Volvo already has included in the City Safety set. This time the system is able to see the pedestrians at night, in complete darkness, also with the ability to automatically brake in the event of need, if they detect a possible impact. City Safety with Pedestrian Detection in darkness will continue to provide automatic braking in the event of imminent collisions with other cyclists or cars. The next step in the evolution of this system is to detect animals and autonomous braking when needed. This facility will be launched after the appearance on the market of the XC90.

The second package offered by Volvo, also in world premiere, on the future XC90 is very interesting, and extremely complex for its functioning. Its official name is the Road Edge Detection and Barrier with Steer Assist (REBDSA). According to information provided by the engineers of the Swedish brand, the machine detects with the cameras if its trajectory tends to go off the road, and discretely veers the steering wheel to keep the tires on the right track. The system detects both sides of the road (a distinction between asphalt and gravel stages, without any need for marking lines) and the barriers protection located in lateral, "guiding" the car accordingly.
Finally, the last system offered by the future XC90 is the most advanced existing version of the Adaptive Cruise Control system with steering assist.

If this type of package is offered today by the most of the brands - depending on the case - keeping away from the car in front and automatically accelerating and braking if it reduces or increases the speed, the system provided by the Volvo XC90 will raise the stakes with steering assistance. The car will take elements such as tracking the vehicle in front, and the marking lines on the highway, and easily steering automatically as a result.

"We are introducing the first Volvos with autonomous steering to avoid accidents and make driving more comfortable," said Thomas Broberg, Senior Safety Advisor Volvo Car Group.

"When the first XC90 was introduced in 2002, it featured a number of groundbreaking safety features, including a world-first solution that helps prevent rollovers. By revealing a number of systems for the next generation XC90 we once again confirm our leadership in automotive safety," he continued.

Thomas Broberg finished saying that "Our approach is based on autonomously driven cars being able to move safely in environments with non-autonomous vehicles and unprotected road users."
At the media event wher the announcement took place, the Volvo Car Group also showedother features that are part of the ongoing struggle to bring the number of people killed and seriously injured in new Volvo cars down to zero by 2020, like Car 2 Car communication and the self-parking car.
