The Future Rival Of Nissan Juke, The Honda Urban SUV Concept Revealed
|   Wednesday, January 16, 2013
Honda unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show its Urban SUV concept, a promoter of Japanese design philosophy of the future and a future rival for the popular 4x4 Nissan Juke.

The Detroit Auto Show marked the beginning of an important model for the evolution of the Honda brand, which launched on this occasion the Urban SUV concept. The world premiere for a 4x4 paves the way for the city car, as the name suggests. Besides, the Urban SUV introduced a new design philosophy.

The serial version of new Urban SUV, will actually be the response of the Honda to the Nissan Juke, the most popular and best-selling model in the segment.

With a length of 4300 mm (169.3 inches), the new concept is 230 mm (9 inches) shorter than the Honda CR-V, in which it will also position both itself in terms of price and in terms of space.

The Urban SUV will give rise to a model developed on the Global Compact Series platform, currently found on the Jazz hatchback and sedan City, sold in several emerging markets. Using this architecture will enable easy adaptation of engines and transmissions reunited under the name Earth Dreams.

Although that term is used on several different engines, in this case, we wouldn't be surprised to see a revised DOHC, Atkinson cycle, direct-injection 1.5 liter I-4. Given its Fit origins, we can expect the crossover to be offered with front-wheel drive, but as prior Fit models were sold with all-wheel drive outside of North America, an all-wheel-drive version of this platform, and this crossover, is far from implausible.
Moreover, this strategy will allow those from Honda to achieve their target for 1.5 million sold units for the Global Compact Series platform cars by 2016.

In the official press release, Honda claims that its first production model, a small class SUV, will have a modern interior, the latest generation of its multimedia systems and central fuel tank configuration. It will not miss the technology dubbed "Magic Seat" that allows many configurations for the rear seats and folding them extremely easy.

Honda previously shied away from confirming the Urban SUV's fate in America, but that's no longer the case. The automaker says the Urban SUV will go on sale (assumedly under a different moniker) in Japan by the end of this year, and go on sale in the U.S. later in 2014. The crossovers destined for the North American market will be built in Honda's new plant in Celaya (with a capacity of 200,000 units), Mexico, which will also produce other vehicles off the same platform (including the next-generation Fit). Honda executives believe this new crossover will play a large part in doubling the global volume of its "Global Compact Series" family to 1.5 million units within two years.

If the Urban SUV follows recent Honda concept car tradition, then we can expect to see an outstanding production version hitting the assembly lines soon.
