The Future Mercedes SL Will Be Completely Different From The Current Generation: AMG Will Make Sure of That!
|   Wednesday, September 14, 2016
The new Mercedes SL could officially debut in just 2 years and inside sources of the German manufacturer said that the future Mercedes SL will be a completely new car with a sportier character, developed by AMG division.

To continue we must go back to 1954 when the first copy of the SL series left the factory. The acronym SL stands for Sportlich Leicht, translated as Sport Lightweight, and highlights the exact character of the model developed by the Germans from Mercedes.
The first to use this name was the 300SL, known as Gullwing, due to the doors that open vertically.
62 years later, the Stuttgart manufacturer seems to want more than ever to emphasize the sporty character of the SL class, which is now preparing for the 8th generation.

The future Mercedes SL was surprised recently for the first time while it was tested on the famous Nurburgring Nordschleife. From these photos we can see that for now the prototype is hiding under the body of a modified S-Class coupe.
But what is not seen and was revealed by a source within the company, is that the future model will be developed by AMG division and will be something entirely different from the current generation.

The novelty and sporty character will be mainly highlighted by using the MSA platform, which brings with it a long wheelbase but also MRA architecture of Mercedes Benz, currently used by the E class.

Meanwhile, for the first time since 2001, the SL will drop the aluminum roof in detriment of a material one, with a construction similar to that shown on the S-Class Cabriolet.

If for the moment we do not know many details about the exterior of the future SL, then let's talk about the engine. This will include, among others, the 3.0-liter turbo engine, which will officially debut in the coming months.

In the basic SL 300 configuration, the engine will have 365 horsepower, and thanks to a higher pressure turbine, it will be pushed to 435 horsepower, which the SL400 model will benefit from.

Top of the range will be represented by the SL500 version, which will have a 4.0-liter V8 engine and 455 horsepower, especially modified by those from AMG.
Since we brought up the subject of the high performance division of the Germans, we have to say that in addition to the 3 versions, Mercedes will still develop 2 more that will wear the well-known logo "Aufrecht Melcher Grossaspach", which is AMG for short.

The first model will be SL63, which will share the same V8 4.0-liter turbo engine with the SL500, but if the first one develops 603 horsepower and 850 Nm of torque, the second, which at the same time will be the most powerful of the range, is the SL65 with its huge twin-turbo V12 engine of 6.0 liters, capable of 621 horsepower.
The current generation was launched late last year, so if we were to go by the Germans standard launch timing, the new Mercedes SL could officially debut in two years.
