The Future GT-R Will Be A Hybrid
|   Friday, November 15, 2013
After the Porsche 918 Spyder, McLaren P1, LaFerrari and BMW i8 supercars that chose hybridization, Nissan GT-R will try this solution with the launch of the car's next generation. Nissan thinks that everyone will win from this situation.

Spearheading in terms of sports, the folks from Nissan will align the GT-R to the recent standards of the auto industry with the launch of the next generation. The GT-R will follow in the footsteps of the Porsche, McLaren, Ferrari and BMW and will become a performance hybrid in which the gasoline engine is coupled with an electric motor that will open new doors in terms of acceleration and average consumption.

According to Nissan Executive Vice President Andy Palmer: "There is an inevitability about electrification of all cars in the future, and there is the very real prospect of enhancements coming from it on a sports car like the Nissan GT-R. The electric systems can fill in the gaps in the torque curve and offer genuine performance gains, as well as lowering emissions. It's win-win, and I'd expect to see some form of hybridization on the next generation of car."

In fact, the Japanese automaker will continue to roll out even more hybrid vehicles. "We'll launch 15 Nissan hybrids by 2016," Palmer said. Naturally he refused to indicate specific models or even debut dates. The company will also be launching its first plug-in hybrid before 2016 is up.

All in all, Palmer said Nissan is "agnostic" about hybrids, in that the company will use them, but doesn't really believe they are the one true powertrain solution. In contrast, he states the company is "fanatical" about full-electric cars, like the Leaf.

According to the same Andy Palmer, both the future performance version of the GT-R Nismo and next generation will probably be hybrid, and will come with substantial performance improvements. The landmark of those of Nissan will always be the time achieved on a tour at the Nurburgring circuit. "We hope to offer improvements with each model year, enhancing things like the aerodynamic capabilities and engine each time," he declared. "The benchmark of that will be our ‘Ring time, and we expect to see it come down each year."

To determine the exact difference in performance between each improved version of the GT-R (Nissan brings a new version each year), the Japanese used an interesting strategy. Thus, they hired four test drivers, who compete for the best time on the Nurburgring Nordschleife race track. The competition between them is guaranteed to bring some figures closer to the upper limit of the machine.

"Sebastien Buemi is a sensational driver. He was flat-out in places that other people brake in. His lack of experience at the ‘Ring didn't hold him back" concludes the same official.

The current Nissan GT-R is powered by a twin-turbo 3.8 liter V6 that delivers 542 hp and 463 lb-ft of torque. It has 0-60 mph time of 2.9 seconds. This ongoing generation of GT-R came in late 2007, which suggests its replacement will arrive around 2015.
