The future BMW 7 Series Will Weigh Less Than The Current 5 Series
|   Wednesday, June 19, 2013
BMW promises that the next generation of the 7 Series will be even lighter than the current 5 Series. The officials responsible for the project ensures that we will meet the most advanced BMW in history.

The BMW Group is confronted with a number of challenges as it seeks to fend off Audi and Mercedes-Benz and keep the title of the world's biggest premium automaker. The company has to find new ways to boost sales while reducing fuel consumption and emissions levels all across its vehicles.

When Mercedes launched its new model, and promoted it as the most technologically advanced product of its history, BMW was forced to come up with a reply to match. No wonder then that Herbert Diess, the man who coordinates the development of the next generation 7 Series promises to be the most advanced from its history.

The first prototypes have already reached the stage of testing in preparation for the final release, which is scheduled for the end of 2015. The world debut will take place at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2015. One of the novelties that we will see in the new 7 Series is the monocoque chassis, constructed of a mix of aluminum, steel and carbon fiber. It will replace the current one, built only from high strength steel. The use of more lightweight materials will make the total weight of the 740i version to fall well below the 1900 kg of the current generation. Official sources say even that it will fall below 1,670 kilograms, the current mass for the 5 Series model in its basic version.

The decision to submit the model of an intensive weight loss process comes after BMW engineers have made great progress in developing the carbon structure of the i3 electric model. Although there are many rumors in this regard, weight loss will not be due to a reduction in the size of the future The BMW 7 Series will measure 5010 mm long, 1815 mm wide and 1425 mm in height.

The engine range will be supplied by petrol units with 6, 8 or 12-cylinder diesels and the famous six-cylinder diesel engine. A further possibility is a new ZF-engineered nine-speed automatic gearbox coming as standard, although this has yet to be confirmed. Rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive will be offered.

The 7-series started its life, as so many of BMW's big hits models did, in the mid-1980s. And although it has gained a bit of weight, and grown in size and technical sophistication across the 4 models that followed, the basis has remained more or less unchanged.

"The i brand will play a pioneering role that drives technology to be rolled out over coming life cycles and to the rest of the BMW brand," said Herbert Diess, the carmaker's head of development, at a supplier event held earlier this month in home city of Munich.

Known internally as the G11, the new BMW 7 Series will also be receiving a 760 xDrive M Performance version. This will boast a more powerful version of the V8 4.4-liter twin-turbo engine.
