The DSX Citroen To Debut At The Shanghai Auto Show This April
|   Tuesday, February 05, 2013
We all know Citroen relies heavily on the DS range, its brand of premium products. After the DS3, DS4 and DS5 hit the showrooms, it became obvious that they have been received well by the public. So the French carmaker takes into account expanding the range. It seems that the officials of the brand have already voted on the onset of a project entailing a completely new product: a premium SUV.

The French are driven by the growth of this segment in recent years and intuitively perceive the receptivity of customers for such vehicles.
The first step towards a 4x4 vehicle with serious off-road capabilities will be made in April this year, when Citroen will exhibit at the Shanghai Motor Show, scheduled from April 21 to 29, a new concept named DSX. The Citroen DSX concept, which predicts a future SUV, is loved by the younger generation, accustomed to urban lifestyle, or so they say.

The concept will pave the way for a possible production version of a premium SUV, hence the letter X next to the acronym of the premium DS Division. To reduce development and manufacturing costs, but also to avoid any controversy regarding the use of volume components borrowed from Mitsubishi, the current partner of the French company, Citro├źn decided to use the existing DS5 platform.

Having regard to the existing versions in the range of the mid-range model, the platform is polyvalent enough for a SUV. It can support both diesel and petrol versions, and hybrid versions. The platform also provides technological support for an all-wheel drive system.

The production version of the DSX concept could receive a diesel-hybrid powertrain, which includes a 37 horsepower electric motor and a 163 horsepower internal combustion engine. The final output of the Citroen DSX is expected to be close to the 200 horsepower threshold. Citroen could also fit the production version of the DSX with a petrol engine. The European version will most likely be sold in a diesel-hybrid variant featuring PSA's HDi diesel engine with an electric motor. The diesel generates 163 horsepower (120 kW) to which the electric motor adds an additional 37 horsepower (34 kW) for a grand total of 200 horsepower (147 kW), a performance similar to that of the 3008 Hybrid4. In China, the DSX is thought to receive a 1.6 liter THP gasoline engine developing some 243 horsepower (179 kW).

In the All Wheel Drive (AWD) version, the electric motor will power the rear wheels while the conventional combustion engine will power the front wheels. However, the non-hybrid versions will not be available with an AWD system.

The Citroen DSX concept measures close to 4.70 meters in length. That means that the model falls in the same market segment as the Audi Q5. It will be a worthy competition to watch, although the winner can probably be guessed in advance. Citroen will probably launch the DSX somewhere in 2014 and it is going to cost less than 40,000 Euros.
