Mazda's Skyactiv at Fleet Show
Since 2007, Mazda have been working on efficient and eco friendly technology through their ‘Sustainable Zoom-Zoom' plan. Their main goal is to improve the average fuel economy of Mazda vehicles, with their aim to make a 30% improvement on 2008. Skyactiv is the name for all of the technology that they create with this goal under the Sustainable Zoom-Zoom plan.

Skyactiv Engines
Regular engines lose 70 to 80 percent of the energy contained in its fuel.
There is therefore a lot of work to be done if we want to create an efficient engine. While others are working on refinement by making engines smaller, Mazda is pursuing the ideal engine combustion. They have created two engines, one that uses gasoline, and the other which uses diesel.

Skyactiv-G
This engine has the world's highest gasoline compression ratio of 14.0:1 for mass production. Because of the high compression combustion, the fuel efficiency is improved by 15%, which means they are half way to achieving their 30% goal.

Skyactiv-D
This engine has the world's lowest diesel engine compression ratio, which improves efficiency by 20%. Diesel engines normally have a high compression ratio, which means that Nitrogen Oxides are produced. Global exhaust gas regulations mean that expensive after treatment systems have to be implemented to get rid of them. The Skyactiv-D lowers the compression ratio, compression temperature and pressure, which means that ignition takes longer, enabling a better mix of air and fuel. This therefore prevents Nitrogen Oxides and soot forming.

Transmissions
Vehicle transmissions vary widely depending on what the manufacturers want them to do. They are important for fuel economy as well as driving performance. Mazda have developed a highly efficient transmission with a direct drive feel in an attempt to capture the best of all the different types of the transmissions that are on the market.

Skyactiv-Drive
This automatic transmission combines the advantages of a variety of types of transmissions, including automatic transmissions, continuously variable transmissions and dual clutch transmissions. It improves torque transfer efficiency and feels very similar to a manual transmission.

Skyactiv-MT
This manual transmission has had a weight reduction of 16% and is more compact. It has a light sports car-like feel, making manual feel easier than ever.

At the Fleet Show
Mazda have recently announced that they will be taking their Skyactiv technology to the Fleet World Fleet Show in the form of the all new Mazda6 and CX-5 this month. They will be available to test drive, and will enable fleet and company car drivers to cut their costs significantly. They have made a prediction that their key models will account for 80% of fleet sales in 2013.

Along with Skyactiv technology used in their engines and transmissions, these models have also had their aerodynamics improved and their weight reduced to make sure that they are as fuel efficient, performance driven and money-saving as they can be.
