The Audi S3 Is Nigh
|   Thursday, May 31, 2012
Next year, the world will be a better place. The Mayans got it wrong; there can't be an Apocalypse this year when we have yet to see the Audi S3 on the road. The expanding S line from Audi will get its newest member soon enough, and it will make the old S3 proud. Until the official debut in Paris, we have gotten our hand a few bits of data concerning the car.

Insiders told Britain's Autocar, a few interesting things about the new S3. The most important thing is that the engine has been switched to something else entirely.
At first, Audi was thinking about putting a slimmer version of the RS3 Sportback's 2.5 liter engine into the new S3, but then changed its mind and turned to a 2 liter turbocharged 4 cylinder engine.

This unit is due to appear all over VW's cars regardless of brand. Thank the ideal compatibility with the MQB platform they developed. The pumped-up version of the EA888 engine will go to replace the old EA113 found in the current S3.

The turbocharger was mentioned, but the new engine get the freshly developed Audi Valve Lift system, which allows for variable control of the valve lift. While doing this the size of the inlet tract for added low-end response is also under strict control. Put in plain numbers, the output of the new engine is supposed to be standing at 276 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque. The improvemnts are not that significant compared to the old S3, only 15 and 22 units higher.

A 6 speed manual will be standard, with a 7 speed unit known as DQ500. Most likely it will maintain the other characteristics the old option had: S-tronic and dual-clutch. Supposedly, the prototype managed to hit the 62 mph limit in 5.5 seconds. The top speed remains the same, capped at 155 mph, which is pretty decent for a 3 door hatch.

Its sizes are 22 mm (0.86 inches) longer, 201 mm (7.9 inches) wider and 21 mm (0.82 inches) taller than the present S3. In spite on larger sizes, the car is expected to be 80 kg (176 lbs) slimmer than its predecessor; total weight is expected to be under 1400 kg (3086 lbs). The use of aluminum for the bonnet and wings, part of the Audi Ultra banner, is mainly responsible for this performance.

The suspension system sees MacPherson struts at the front and a multi-link setup at the rear of the car, and adaptive dampers will come standard. The Drive Select system will also mark its presence, keeping an eye on throttle response, shift patterns on the auto, the feel on the electro-mechanical steering, as well as the spring settings.

Stylish alterations include a single frame grille, a deep front bumper with sizeable air ducts, a prominent spoiler above the hatch, and the sills get a touch of new, being better individualized.

After the hatchback, a 5 door S3 Sportback is planned, and a new sedan is on the way too.
