The Audi R8 e-tron breaks all previously recorded lap times at Nurburgring Nordschleife
|   Thursday, July 26, 2012
Audi has broken all the previous lap time records (hybrid), with the new R8 e-tron at the test track in Nürburgring Nordschleife. This track is considered to be among the toughest race tracks in the world and the e-tron was being driven by Markus Winkelhock, a professional driver and Le Mans champion.

The 12.92 mile track was completed in a mind blowing 8 minutes and 09 seconds. Audi have set another benchmark with the e-tron. A comparison between a conventional engine and the hybrid engine needs to be done in order to understand the impressive performance of the e-tron.

The current record holder on the track is a Gumpert Apollo Sport, powered by an Audi V8 petrol engine, producing 700 PS and the lap time on the Apollo is 7 minutes and 11 seconds. Hence, for a hybrid vehicle, the R8 e-tron has managed to put up a decent show.

The Audi e-tron which completed the test track is similar to the production model, which is set to go under production later this year. The hybrid engine develops power output equal to 280 kW and produces 820 Nm of torque.

The e-tron has an impressive acceleration and goes from 0 – 60 mph in 4.2 seconds. The top speed is limited to 124 mph but track testing vehicle was tuned to go up to 155 mph. The lithium ion battery on the e-tron has the capacity to store 49 kWh of energy which can power the car up to 133 miles.

The battery has been engineered to smartly fit between the passenger's seat and the rear axle and it is charged during braking and coasting the vehicle. The e-tron's body frame is made of aluminum and as a result the e-tron weighs just 1,780 kg and is lighter than the R8 by a huge margin.
In order to show the true capabilities of the car, Audi planned on another record. Just after setting a lap time record with a hybrid, Markus Winkelhock completed the last6 two laps one after another without a pit stop and in a normal 124 mph limited e-tron.

Whatever it might seem, the e-tron is not a race car but a street car and hence the aerodynamics has nothing to do with its performance. The car uses the same body frame as that of the R8 but with a lower centre of gravity and enhanced weight distribution.

The car offers advanced driving features like a retuned suspension and braking assistance. The car handles quite well for a hybrid and can be used as a track car. It attacks the corners with ease and accelerates out of it in a smooth manner. There is minimal wheel spin even with so much power and the car manages to stay incredible stable at high speeds.

This incident has been the first case of a hybrid car performing successfully at Nürburgring Nordschleife and Audi is sure proud of its creation. This comes at a time just after the 24 Hours Le Mans win for Audi. 2012 has surely proved to be Audi's lucky number so far.
