The Audi A3 G-Tron: The First Premium Compact Powered By Compressed Natural Gas
|   Monday, March 04, 2013
Audi is to bring the A3 Sportback g-tron to Geneva, the first premium compact model that can work, as necessary or as a driver option, using compressed natural gas (CNG), gasoline or special fuel-gas. The compact 5-door is scheduled to reach the market by the end of 2013 and is powered with synthetic methane, CO2 neutral, called the Audi e-gas.

The propulsion is provided by the 1.4 TSI engine, adapted to be supplied with one of three alternative sources of fuel, the injection system, the turbocharger and catalytic converter being modified.
The total power was reduced from 140 to 110 hp and the maximum torque now reaches the threshold of 200 Nm.

The performance of the new A3 Sportback g-tron is close to that provided by a conventional propulsion: acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h in 11 seconds and top speed of 190 km / h. According to company, the consumption of compressed natural gas or Audi e-gas of 3.5 kg/100 km. The CO2 emissions are estimated at 95 g / km or even 35 g / km, when calling on the e-gas, the fuel produced by Audi using wind energy, but only available in Germany.

The five-door model consumes on average 3.5 kg of CNG or Audi e-gas. When the Audi A3 Sportback g-tron is powered by the e-gas, no extra CO2 emissions are emitted other than those that were used in its production, so that the cycle is closed. When the energy demand needed to produce e-gas and wind generators are included in the analysis, all CO2 emissions are less than 30 grams per km.

The Audi A3 Sportback g-tron integrates the entire technological experience of the Audi carmaker - from construction technology with lightweight materials, infotainment system, to driver assistance systems. But primarily present is the high tech "CNG drive", from fuel storage. The natural gas is stored in two tanks hidden under the trunk floor. They weigh 27 kg each and can store up to 7 kg of CNG at a pressure of 200 bar.

The Audi A3 Sportback g-tron can travel 400 km on gas, increasing to 900 km autonomy for starting petrol supply, so that full autonomy (1300 km) is only rivaled by the Audi TDI diesel.
A sensor system continuously monitors the gas pressure in the supply system. When the pressure is too low or, conversely, too high, the system automatically switches to power of the car from gas or e-gas to gasoline.

With the e-gas project, The Audi is the first carmaker that develops a chain of sustainable energy production. It starts from the electricity produced from renewable sources and the final products are hydrogen and the synthetic Audi e-gas product. Construction of the first industrial plant in the world producing synthetic methane (E-gas) from CO2 and renewable electricity is almost ready in Werlte (Emsland district of Lower Saxony), Germany. This will produce e-gas for 1500 new Audi A3 Sportback g-tron, with an annual average of 15,000 km traveled.

Its world premiere is at the Geneva Motor Show (March 7 to 17, 2013), and potential buyers can expect the Audi A3 Sportback g-tron by the end of this year.
