The 2015 Mustang Could Lend Parts for A Lincoln Sedan
|   Thursday, June 28, 2012
It seems that Ford is interested in taking parts of the developing Mustang and underpin a Lincoln sedan. More specifically, they are thinking about taking the rear-wheel-drive platform as a basis to instill life into the once glorious Lincoln name.

Car and Driver has learned that plans are being considered to create a new 4 door sedan using the Mustang's MacPherson front and new independent rear suspension as its basis, together with some of the pony car's larger underbody stampings.
This bit of news isn't as surprising at it seems at first, seeing the company has screamed its support of the brand time and time again. Well, things have moved much beyond the phase of declarations, but let's hope this plan has will be actually out into action.

A rear-wheel drive Lincoln would certainly serve to raise interested in the name, as well as give it a fighting chance against rivals from Cadillac, Lexus, and other premium brands. There 3 possible ways of attack indentified by those at Car and Driver, and we agree with them wholeheartedly.

If the project bears fruit, the new Lincoln could fill in some gaps that put behind its competitors in customer preferences. For example, it could take on the role of an entry-level premium vehicle. This segment has shown to be profitable and the current top dogs, Cadillac's ATS and Lexus' IS are making ton of money. Ford made a mistake when it thought the 2013 MKZ with its optional AWD could compete on even ground with the two. It is a reasonable car in its own right, but not good enough to tackle the big boys.

Speaking of the MKZ, a relative of his, the MKS, should probably be aimed at a different segment. It is not capable of withstanding the assault of names like the, BMW 5-series, Cadillac CTS, Lexus GS, Infiniti M, and Mercedes E Class. Put in numbers, the MKS only sold 12,217 units in 2011, while the CTS reached 55,000 units. This could be the turning-point for Lincoln with its rear-wheel drive model. it will take time and perseverance to become a leader, but at the very least it will rake in more money.

Lastly, the brand needs something significant to make it stand out against its competitor, something lacking at the moment. However, this would mean significant efforts and reengineering would have to be invested in bringing the Mustang platform to a level where a sedan would be feasible.

The technical difficulties don't end there; the car would have to sport all-wheel drive too, if it wants to be a genuine luxury sedan. Many have failed in providing that option, and the cars have been a failure in those parts where winter is an issue. Seeing the Mustang's platform is design with rear-wheel drive in mind, a lot of difficulties will arise.

Now, even with all those obstacles passed, there is still the issue of profitability. Ford would want profit right away, but given the costs, it will take Lincoln about a decade or so to deliver satisfying results. It is questionable whether or not Ford would wait that long.
