The 2014 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG
|   Friday, January 11, 2013
The 2014 E Class range of cars from Mercedes has just been revealed, and the company is already showcasing the much anticipated 2014 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG. We are talking about the sedan and wagon styles, in case you were wondering. Now, on to the cars themselves.

If you recall, AMG promised to deliver an aggressive new styling for the new E63, and we are happy to announce that the promise has been fulfilled. Once again, the Affalterbach tuner has proven its worth.

Many aggressive elements can now be found on the E63, in any case, more so than in previous versions. For example, the front section seems to mimic that of the DTM race car. The new twin blade radiator grille and a new A-wing front bumper all play an important role in that giving off that impression. Overall, the new styling is very nice indeed.

However, the changes are not just cosmetic; the really hot stuff is elsewhere. The most noticeable addition is the 4Matic all-wheel drive on the E63 AMG, an option which will be standard for customers in the US. No doubt some fans of the rear wheel drive system will weep upon hearing this, but such is life and we must deal with it.

AMG has been quick to stress out that its 4Matic system is not the same as the one Mercedes uses; their version is more performance oriented and lighter. The 2014 E63 AMG is the tuner's latest step towards a complete AWD lineup as a response to the increasing amounts of power and torque each new model introduction brings.

Of course, a range topping S Model couldn't be left out of the deal, so we get a unit that develops some 577 horses and 590 lb-ft of torque. As a comparison, the normal car only has 550 horsepower and 531 lb-ft of torque.

The car's close relative, the CLS63 AMG, will also be available with an S Model and have standard all wheel drive for US clients.

AMG's twin turbocharged 5.5 liter V8 engine is matched to the AMG Speedshift 7 speed automatic transmission and is the main culprit behind those numbers. 4 transmission modes are available, "C" (Controlled Efficiency), "S" (Sport), "S+" (Sport plus) and "M" (Manual), together with rev-matching on downshifts as well as launch control. That means that the E63 AMG 4Matic S-Model Sedan will go over 60 mph in just 3.5 seconds on it way to the 186 mph max speed.

The 4Matic system has a 33-67 ratio front to rear torque split, so the feeling of rear propulsion is still there along with the extra traction in case the roads get slippery.

On the inside of the cars, we get a lot of tasteful and expensive materials. Expect carbon fiber and aluminum, sport seats, a black Nappa leather steering wheel rim with flattened top while the bottom is finished in Alcantara with gray contrasting seams.
