The 2013 Mercedes A45 AMG
|   Friday, February 15, 2013
The high-performance version of the new A Class Mercedes is prepared for the Geneva Motor Show (March 7 to 17). Titled the A45 AMG, the lowest Mercedes model ever prepared for AMG, it aims to provide a dynamics and efficiency lesson to its rivals.

Although it was initially announced to have a maximum power of 340 horsepower, the final model series will have no less than 360 horses and a torque figure of 450 Nm. These values will transform the new A45 AMG into the most powerful compact hot hatch from the market but also in the most powerful production car with an engine capacity of 2 liters, the ratio of 181 hp/liter being worthy of the supercars league.

The merit lies in a turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engine with aluminum block, manually assembled by the specialists in the Affalterbach sports division. The cooling system was taken directly from the SLS AMG flagship and the twin-scroll turbocharger has an extremely high boost pressure. The advanced system of direct injection is responsible for maintaining consumption and emissions allowances commendable, given the record strength. Mercedes announces a consumption of 6.9 l/100 km per mixed regime, 161 g CO2/km emissions and compliance with the stringent future Euro 6 standard, coming in 2015. Start & Stop system will be standard.

To exploit the full potential of this most efficient engine, a traction level that borders on perfection was needed and winning combination was that of a 4x4 4MATIC system and SPEEDSHIFT DCT seven-speed transmission and double clutch. Both were heavily revised by specialists from AMG. The SPEEDSHIFT DCT box is offered for the first time on a four-wheel drive system. There are three modes: C (Comfort / Controlled Efficiency), S (Sport) and M (Manual), the latter two benefiting from more aggressive settings inspired by those used on the extreme version of SLS AMG GT. And ESP has three different settings (on, off, Sport) and delivers the Dynamic Curve Assist function, which combats high lateral forces typical of a hot hatch.

No drivetrain has "escaped" the vigilant eyes of division AMG. The A45 AMG has the new front and rear suspension completely recalibrated, with stronger dampers and springs, low ground clearance, 18-inch wheels plus a completely new high-performance braking system with 350 mm ventilated discs up front and 330 mm in the back.

The performance measure can only be on the top of the whole technical package. Sprinting from 0 to 100 km/h takes just 4.6 seconds, but the top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h.

Redesigned bumpers and sills bring more aggressiveness and red calipers and dual exhaust complete the package of aesthetic changes, being subtle but effective.

The Mercedes A45 AMG is expected in showrooms across Europe this summer. Until the advent of the future Audi RS3, or 1M possibly, the only direct rival remains the BMW M135i. Equipped with the xDrive all-wheel drive and animated by a turbocharged six-cylinder model, the peak of the 1 Series offers "only" 340 horses, standing a bit below the new A45 AMG's performance.

The Mercedes A45 AMG would cost in the around 45.000 euros in Europe.
