Test Mule Based on the Future Alfa Romeo Spider and Mazda MX 5 Spotted
|   Wednesday, October 02, 2013
A test mule based on the next generation Mazda MX 5 and the Alfa Romeo Spider, was recently spotted testing in North America. The first spy images of the test mule are now available over the internet and if rumors are to be believed, this is the founding stone of these next generation vehicles. Latest test drives were conducted in Michigan recently after a recent treaty between Mazda and Alfa Romeo to design a new vehicle based on the tried and tested MX 5 platform.

This test mule is rumored to be powered by a 1750TB engine, lifted off the Alfa Romeo, which is likely to power the Spider as well. This four cylindered 1.75 liter engine displaces 237 BHP while this sub 1000 kg vehicle should perform quite well owing to its high power to weight ratio. Industry experts estimate similar performance from the Spider and the 4C.

The engine is mated to a TCT dual clutch paddle shift transmission system while this car is capable of accelerating from 0 – 60 MPH within 4.5 seconds. This is high performance within a budget, two things that these companies stand for. Alfa Romeo plans on providing multiple engine options on its Spider and this should ensures sufficient variants from enthusiasts to choose from.

A 1.4 liter TB engine lifted off the GIulietta is expected to make its foray into the Spider soon while another 165 BHP engine variant should be introduced to this lineup soon enough. Mazda is offering its Sky Active technology for use in the Spider while this is expected to be its best selling engine among the others. An advanced six speed manual transmission system should do justice to its power train and we expect an optional automatic transmission for the cars.

The MX 5 is one of lightest vehicles on road, due to its advanced engineering works. Mazda plans on launching a supped up version of MX 5 quite soon although this will not be in direct competition with the Spider. Advanced engineering ensures high fuel efficiency as well as low CO2 emission and this ensures better ratings from Governments worldwide.

Base price of both these vehicles are expected to start at $20,000 although final prices are yet to be revealed. Mazda plans on offering their vehicle relatively cheap although Alfa Romeo should attach a moderate price tag too, even though additional trims are expected to be available via Alfa Romeo. Work on the Spider is expected to begin by early 2015 while deliveries should commence by year end.

Both these vehicles are at their early stages of production although brand and ethical value is high. Therefore, not much is left to the imagination. Final products are expected to be above satisfactory hence, hype around these vehicles have not began flooding the markets as of yet. Things are however expected to change soon as both Mazda and Alfa Romeo plan on divulging technical specifications soon. This should get the word back on and generate interest around both cars.
