Tesla To Build A Giga Lithium-Ion Battery Factory To Meet Expected Production Figures By 2017

After revolutionizing the electric vehicles market, showing that such cars can achieve high performance where even the larger manufacturers didn't prove reliable, Elon Musk, Tesla Motors Director, announces for the future truly courageous plans.

Between various statements he gave to the press at the opening of the first Tesla store in London, one very interesting fact has crept: Tesla is going to sell no less than 500,000 cars per year by 2017, and for that it takes the construction of the largest manufacturing plant of lithium-ion batteries in the world.
This factory would be so big that it would use one half of the quantity of lithium used worldwide for the production of batteries at this time.

According to the plans, the plant will be built in the United States and will work exclusively for the production of car batteries used by the Tesla. Although there is no announced deadline for the building and commissioning of the production site, we already know that the so-called Generation 3 Tesla models, which will start expanding the range of models available in several segments, is scheduled to appear on the market around the year 2017. According to preliminary information, the cheapest model built by Tesla will cost around 35,000 dollars in the United States.

"I think we will make toward the back end of that a lot more cars, and so there needs to be other agreements with some combination of Panasonic, maybe with others. Panasonic is also our primary partner, but when it comes to the high- volume third-generation vehicle it's clear there is going to need to be incremental production capacity. ... There is going to need to be some kind of giga factory built" Elon Musk said.
Production in North America is just one of the options, however.

"We are not quite ready to make a big announcement on the cell and battery giga factory, but we are exploring a lot of these options right now, and if I were to guess I think that we would do that giga factory with the raw materials coming in all the way to finished packs with partners ... and that factory most likely would be in North America, but we are investigating other options as well" added Elon Musk.

He also dismissed the question about the availability of raw materials to meet his needs as well as other EV makers.
"Raw materials are not an issue. ... I wouldn't worry about, say, lithium supply. There is a lot of lithium out there and the main constituents really in the cell are, by weight, actually nickel and cobalt, aluminum, then lithium. Lithium is like maybe 1 percent of the cell in that."

The South African-born American is not at his first "revolution" of this type of independent production. A few years ago, at the time when engines for missiles that were to be used in the space project, Space X, Musk took the final decision (considered impossible at that time) to produce in-house engines, building for this a special factory. This factory built missile from the stage of sheet metal, to the finished product ready to be launched into space.

Meanwhile, the plant operates at full capacity and Space X has remained one of the main contractors of NASA, the US space agency relying largely on Musk's rockets for their own projects.
