Tesla Presented New Way Of Changing Batteries
|   Tuesday, June 25, 2013
Elon Musk, Tesla's CEO, presented the revolutionary technology behind the new battery changing stations for electric vehicles. This changes a discharged battery with a charged one in 90 seconds.

Tesla plans a real revolution in the field of electric vehicles. Although the systems or technologies introduced by them are not always world premieres, their integration seems to be the key for proper operation. The last example is the system of changing the batteries developed for the Tesla Model S, and any models that will come after it.
Even though Better Place, an Israeli company, has designed and built such a system in several countries and reached insolvency, those from Tesla Motors have not given up the idea of changing the batteries and have developed their own system.

It will only be available in the brand charging stations called Supercharger and operate without human intervention. Thanks to this technical solution, the system provides a charging time of 90 seconds. Practically, a user can come to the station with a discharged battery, and go with a charged battery, waiting only a maximum one minute and a half. As if the whole system would not have been quite impressive, it costs between 60 and 80 dollars for each "full". Also, the customers are offered the further option of free charges of the current battery through the "Supercharger" system from the Tesla Motors.

Elon Musk said that the customers will need to take only decision when they arrive at a Tesla station. That decision is "do you prefer fast or free?" However, if they go for the battery swap, customers will also have one additional decision to make. They can stop by the very same Tesla station on their way back home and refit the original battery for the same price, pay to have the original battery send to another service, or pay an still unknown price to keep the new battery.

The system uses robots identical to those used by Tesla's factory, to pry the discharged battery and make room for the new battery. Customers can opt for delivery of the old battery, at home, or to replace the old battery with the newest one, against payment, as already mentioned. The system is compatible only with the Tesla Model S and promises to revolutionize the life of U.S. Tesla customers. They will have a loading station network, comparable with the fuel feed station.

Elon Musk, CEO of the company, made a daring demonstration comparing the charging time required for two copies of the Tesla Model S, with the time needed for supplying the tank of an Audi A8 at a traditional gas station. The two electric models have managed to be faster than the conventional vehicle. That creates a premise to eliminate preconceived ideas about charging stations infrastructure being necessary for electric vehicles and the closely related ideas on the limited possibilities for charging the battery using the current electric vehicles on the market. The system is ready for implementation in the Tesla network in USA. Implementation costs are 500,000 dollars per Supercharger station in the USA.
