Tesla Powerwall - The Battery That Promises Home Energy Independence
|   Tuesday, June 02, 2015
The automotive industry represents just one of the areas that Elon Musk intends to revolutionize in the coming years. The American born in South Africa 43 years ago is seen as one of the people who have the knowledge and financial resources to change the world: with the SpaceX he wants to send people to Mars using reusable rockets and through the Solar City he is trying to bring clean energy in your own home by using solar panels.

But solar panels are not sufficient, which is why Tesla is preparing to launch home batteries that you can use to become energy independent.

One of the characteristics that currently define the concept of "smart home" is the use of solar panels as an energy source. Unfortunately, the amount of energy captured by the solar panels rarely corresponds to the amount of energy required of a house: the panels produce most of the energy during the day, while consumption occurs mainly in the morning and evening. Therefore, the classic scenario is that the excess energy stored in the solar panel is sold to the traditional distribution networks and the consumer buys back the power in the evening.

Musk wants to change this by launching home batteries that Tesla baptized Powerwall and which will be marketed under the Tesla Energy brand, a separate division of the car manufacturer.

The main advantage is that the lithium-ion battery stores the energy taken from solar panels and releases it into the power grid of the house when you need power, no matter the time of day. Theoretically, in this way the house becomes independent of traditional energy providers.

The Tesla Powerwall weighs 100 kilograms and, as the name suggests, is mounted on the wall, no matter if it is an interior or exterior wall. The battery sizes are 1300x860x180 mm and works properly at temperatures between 20 and 43 Celsius degrees (68-109 Fahrenheit).

Tesla will sell two types of Powerwall. The cheapest version will cost 3,000 dollars, has a capacity of 7 kWh and is dedicated to everyday use, while the top version costs 3,500 dollars, has 10 kWh and is used as a backup device for situations where electricity provided by a traditionally operator has halted. For homes that need more capacity, up to 9 batteries can be mounted to achieve a total capacity of 63 respectively 90 kWh. The Tesla Powerwall battery is guaranteed for 10 years and does not require maintenance.

The technology is useful in rural areas which currently do not have an electricity network because the cost of solar panels coupled to a Powerwall could be lower than developing a large electrical network.

The intention of those from Tesla is to radically change the way people use energy and will significantly influence the businesses of traditional suppliers. They already anticipate that the number of residential housing that will turn to to solar panels connected to batteries will increase significantly in the coming years.
Also in recent years, the costs of solar panels have decreased due to increased production in China and the price of batteries such as Tesla Powerwall may drop after the US company will be able to increase production after the inauguration of the "giga-factory".

These factors will contribute to increasing the popularity of solar energy, which sooner or later will exceed the production of electricity using traditional methods.
