Tesla Model S Will Compete In New Electric Car Championship - The Electric GT
|   Wednesday, April 06, 2016
After the success of electric racing cars from the Formula E Championship, on the horizon we see new "electrified championship" called Electric GT World Series. It will focus on cars in the GT class, which will have a technically pure electric substrate. Some 20 Tesla Model S will compete in the first serious competition for electric cars in the world.

The growing popularity of electric cars has the effect of unexpected development for motorsport competitions with green propulsion.
The first step was taken in 2014 with the launch of Formula E, the first competition for electric race cars in the world, which attracted many veteran pilots who have not found their place in Formula 1. But we know now that 2017 could mark an absolute premiere in the motorsport world by launching the first competition with series electric cars.

A total of 10 teams have already registered for the 2017 season that will compete with 20 Tesla Model S in 7 stages that will take place in Europe, America and Asia on tracks like Barcelona, Donington, Mugello and Estoril!

The championship initiators have chosen the Tesla Model S electric car as the base car because the Model S is the most capable pure electric car and has extremely good potential for racing. In the international championship, Electric GT, other car manufacturers can take part if they have electric models similar to the Tesla Model S.

Even though the Tesla has more powerful models, such as the four-wheel drive P90D, the cars racing in the Electric GT championship will have the technical value of the version with rear-wheel drive, Model S P85 +, because rear-wheel drive is more spectacular in the racing circuit. The power of the racing cars will be identical to the street electric vehicle, being more than enough for racing.

The cars, which will have the standard package of the version Tesla Model S P85 +, will go from 0 to 100 km / h in 3.2 seconds and will have 416 hp and 601 Nm of torque. However, the cars will include modifications to the suspension, brakes and cooling system, specific for the racing track.

The bodywork will be replaced with carbon fiber, with flared wings ailerons and spoilers similar to the DTM cars, so the weight will be reduced drastically. Braking and suspension also will be modified for racing on the track - the EGT cars will be about 10 seconds faster than the Tesla Model S P85 + street version.

"We chose the Tesla model S simply because it is one of the best cars ever made, and certainly one of the best 100 per cent electric cars" declared Agustín Payá, Technical Director for Electric GT Holdings, the owner and championship promoter.
It seems the fashion of electrification is set to make a mark in motor racing and this is a good thing for the development of technologies that underpin electric vehicles. Ultimately, from these championships the common people are winning, as they will receive safer electric street cars and perfect in terms of engineering.
