Tesla, Chinese Team To Build Electric Charging Infrastructure
|   Saturday, September 06, 2014
In its latest bid to make electric cars an important part of China's transportation future, Tesla Motors, a leading US manufacturer of electrics, and a Chinese phone carrier have teamed to build as many as 400 charging stations across China.

Accordingly, China's Unicom is set to provide space for Tesla to build electric charging stations in as many as 120 cities across the country. Tesla will operate the stations while Unicom provides the space and basic services.
In addition, 20 super-charging stations are planned in 20 cities. Unicom and Tesla, based in Palo Alto, CA, will build and operate the supercharging stations as partners.

The Chinese government hopes that in approving the plan to build the charging services that electrics will become popular and, in doing so, will help drive the country's plan to have its own electric vehicle industry.

China hopes to make electrics a major part of the transportation infrastructure as it has a serious smog problem in its major cities and electrics, which have zero emissions, are slated to provide the backbone of the vehicle infrastructure. The government had hoped to have a thriving industry established by next year, building as many as 500,000 vehicles. That goal hasn't been met as China only has 78,000 electrics on the road.

Tesla spokesperson, Peggy Yang, in an email statement to the AP, noted that the agreement between Unicom and Tesla will help to speed up the Tesla charging network. Chinese regulations prevent major access to the market by foreign firms unless they share technology with China. Quite naturally, observers note, that few firms want to provide the tools needed for partners to become competitors.

BMW has also announced plans for 50 charging stations, the AP noted.
