Tesla Allows Other Car Makers To Use All Its Patents
|   Monday, June 23, 2014
Tesla Motors has broken a barrier in the auto industry allowing other car manufacturers to use its patents for the construction of electric cars. Elon Musk, the founder, says the patents have done their job. These patents were originally used to protect the technology for fear that they will be destroyed by the major car manufacturers in the world.

But now he realized that they have no effective programs in the field of electric vehicles, and Tesla cannot produce so many cars to change the world by reducing carbon emissions at industry level.

In other words, Tesla Motors will not initiate any legal action against companies that will use the patents and technology for purposes favorable to the development of electric vehicles. Elon Musk and his team will rely on the good will of other companies in the automotive industry for using the technology developed in the last 10 years in order to build more vehicles with zero carbon emissions, which are more secure than current models and to make zero-emission personal transport sustainable and affordable.

The founder of Tesla Motors has not missed the opportunity to criticize the electric vehicle development programs of other cars builders. He said that these programs are disappointing and zero emission vehicles represent, on average, only 1 percent of their total sales and the existing ones also have much too limited autonomy.

The Americans from Tesla managed to break the industry barrier in which few technologies are being offered in this scheme to other companies who want to use them to support the progress of humanity.

"When I started out with my first company, Zip2, I thought patents were a good thing and worked hard to obtain them. And maybe they were good long ago, but too often these days they serve merely to stifle progress, entrench the positions of giant corporations and enrich those in the legal profession, rather than the actual inventors. After Zip2, when I realized that receiving a patent really just meant that you bought a lottery ticket to a lawsuit, I avoided them whenever possible" said Elon Musk CEO Tesla Motors.

"Technology leadership is not defined by patents, which history has repeatedly shown to be small protection indeed against a determined competitor, but rather by the ability of a company to attract and motivate the world's most talented engineers. We believe that applying the open source philosophy to our patents will strengthen rather than diminish Tesla's position in this regard" he added.

Fortunately, those from Tesla are not singular in this respect. There are two notable examples in the field. One is the case of the safety belt, used at least once by every man who has ever climbed into a car.

As some of you already know, the seat belt was patented by the Swedish from Volvo, but they decided to let other car manufacturers use this technology free of charge, in the spirit of road safety.
Recently, for the same reasons, Ford representatives said they would provide the seat belt airbag technology to any automobile manufacturer interested in it.

In addition to Tesla Motors, Elon Musk founded companies such as PayPal, SpaceX and Zip2. Each idea of the entrepreneur, born in South Africa, has been successful, although these did not always have favorable financial situation.
