Tata Motors Could Build A Billion Euro Factory In Cluj, Romania
|   Thursday, January 31, 2013
The Indians from Tata Motors could take the old Nokia factory in Jucu, Romania, making it the third largest car manufacturer in that country, according to the Dutch publication of Autoweek.

The conversion into an automobile production plant could remove from the Indian giant's pockets at least one billion euro. Investments would be recuperated fairly quickly, as the factory in Romania becomes the company's main gateway to the European market.

Jucu-assembled cars would be exempt from the tax imposed on products manufactured outside of the European Union, and the cost of delivery at various locations on the continent would be minimized due to the advantageous positioning plant in Cluj relative to motorways in Hungary.

Tata Motors Limited (formerly TELCO) is an Indian multinational automotive manufacturing company headquartered in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India and a subsidiary of the Tata Group. Its products include passenger cars, trucks, vans, coaches, buses and military vehicles. It is the world's eighteenth-largest motor vehicle manufacturing company, fourth-largest truck manufacturer and second-largest bus manufacturer by volume.

Tata Motors has auto manufacturing and assembly plants in Jamshedpur, Pantnagar, Lucknow, Sanand, Dharwad and Pune, India, and in Argentina, South Africa, Thailand and the United Kingdom. It has research and development centers in Pune, Jamshedpur, Lucknow and Dharwad, India, and in South Korea, Spain, and the United Kingdom. It has a bus manufacturing joint venture with Marcopolo S.A., Tata Marcopolo, and a construction equipment manufacturing joint venture with Hitachi, Telcon Construction Solutions.

It plans to establish plants in Turkey, Indonesia and Eastern Europe.
Tata Motors' principal subsidiaries include Jaguar Land Rover, Tata Daewoo and Tata Hispano.

The new production facility located on the industrial platform Tetarom 3 will cover an area of 11 hectares (about 16 million square feet) and will create at least 5.000 new jobs in the area. Tetorom 3 is the third phase of the industrial park, which is being promoted by Cluj County Council (CCC). The park spreads on 154 hectares and is located in the village of Jucu, near Cluj.

The report says that currently Tata Motors is negotiating with the CCC a 1 billion euro investment, but an official announcement will later be made regarding this issue due to the automaker's request for discretion in the process. It is rumored that the plant to be built here will be a full-fledged production facility, able to manufacture commercial vehicles, passenger cars and even buses. The components could be purchased from the local vendors, with tax benefits.

In addition to current models like the Indica, Indigo, Safari and Telcoline, Tata Motors could produce the next generation of the Nano city car in Romania (costing about 2.500 dollars per car); already the model was prefigured last year in Geneva with the concept car Megapixel.

Let's hope all goes well, because every move that strengthens the auto industry is a good one. And maybe the Indian manufacturer will benefit from exposure to the European market conditions in other ways, not just financially.
