Subaru WRX STI - Official Images Of The New Performance Sedan
|   Thursday, January 16, 2014
Subaru has used this year's edition of the Detroit Auto Show to unveil the next WRX STI generation.
Unlike the older generation, the new WRX STI will be available only in sedan version. The sporty look will be provided by a body kit that has already been presented. It includes a new front spoiler, a hood with central air intake to cool the four-cylinder engine, side skirts, a massive deflector made from carbon fiber, and two pairs of exhaust pipes.

And to respect tradition, Subaru did not forget the oversized spoiler placed on the trunk door. The aesthetic package is completed by a set of gold rims 18 inches in size, on which the performance tires are mounted.

Tested extensively even on the famous Nurburgring circuit, the new WRX STI is powered by a turbo engine with four-cylinder displacing 2.5 liters capable of producing 305 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and a torque of 393 nm at 4000 rpm. These resources are supported by a revised gearbox with six steps, which sends everything to the famous Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive. Not forgotten, are the dynamics control system (VDC) or the Torque Vectoring Control function. In addition, the Subaru WRX STI earns points in terms of road grip because it has a 25 mm longer wheelbase.

Subaru will offer a limited edition of 1,000 units WRX STI, Launch Edition model. This model provides exclusivity by featuring WR Blue paint and gold BBS forged alloy wheels and a unique interior trim.

The 2015 WRX STI shows its strong personality inside of the car too. The new Alcantara seating surfaces accented by red and black leather bolsters and red stitching set the tones for the upgraded and roomier cabin.

The driver, via the Subaru Intelligent Drive (SI-DRIVE) powertrain management system, can choose 3 driving modes: Intelligent, Sport and Sport Sharp. Depending on the driving mode, the SI-DRIVE changes the vehicle performance by regulating the engine control module as well as by fine tuning the electronic throttle control system.

As many of you already know, the model that gave birth to the idea of the WRX, and then the STI, has been the Impreza. The model has been placed on the market in 1993, the year in which it was presented to the public, as well as the first WRX. The car was equipped back then with 240 horsepower on Japan's market, but in Europe it came with just 208 horses and a different name: Impreza GT.

In 1994, the model was already offering 260 horsepower. Also, in the same year, along the WRX the STI logo appeared, a Subaru Tecnica International abbreviation, equipped with a revised suspension, transmission and engine. In 1996 the Japanese add 20 horsepower, and the total went up to 280 horses.
The second generation Impreza, between 2000 and 2007, also benefited from a WRX STI version, which was powered by a turbocharged 2.5-liter unit.

The third generation Impreza brought a novelty not easily handled by fans: a hatchback body style. The car came with 300 horsepower and 407 Nm in Europe. Only in 2011, Subaru responded to the criticism and launch a sedan version.
