Study Shows White Remains Most Popular Car Color Globally For The Fourth Year In A Row
|   Saturday, December 06, 2014
Axalta Coating Systems presented its annual report on the automotive color popularity in 2014. While Europeans have preferred blue cars, customers on other continents chose white.

Blue was the most popular color for cars sold in Europe in 2014, says Axalta Coating Systems, a supplier of automotive paints which monitors trends in the field since 1953. Meanwhile, customers in Asia, North America, and, South America chose white for cars purchased in 2014.
In terms of volume, white is the most popular in the world in 2014, marking for the fourth consecutive year the first position in the ranking. Black owns 19 percent of the global market for new car colors in 2014, but is down from last year. Meanwhile, red, blue and yellow have been up one percent globally from last year.

The 2014 edition of the annual study marks the introduction of matrix color, a forecast Axalta makes regarding future nuances that will be used on cars produced over the next four years. The forecast of Axalta regarding colors in the next four years is divided into four groups shades: pale shades, bright colors, matte versions and versions with dark tint, each of which will have a moment of popularity in the near future on some markets around the globe.

In North America, white is the most popular, covering 25 percent of cars sold in 2014. The color red is becoming more popular in North America, compared to other regions. In the same area, white, silver and black decreased by one percent. The most popular shades are the pearlescent finishes, at least in the United States, the biggest car market in North America. In Mexico, non-metallic paints are preferred. South America prefers white also (27 percent). In second place comes silver, 25 percent and 12 percent goes to black in third place. Red has become more popular in South America too.

Europeans liked blue cars in 2014, attracted by the light shades and medium of this color. The biggest increases in popularity for this color have been compact segments, sports, as well as minivans.

Silver and white have been declining and green is the least popular best-selling shade, with 1 percent of the market. Asians are similar to Americans in terms of color preferences in 2014, white having a share of 30 percent of the market.

In South Korea, 34 percent of cars sold this year have been white. Black is second in Asia, where it still has 19 percent of the market, mainly due to the Chinese market, where 24 percent of luxury cars sold are black. In Japan European influence is increasing, with blue being more popular there than in any other Asian country.

"Our Color Popularity Report data not only allows us to see the colors most favored by consumers but, more importantly, it enables us to forecast future trends. Every year, designers from our OEM customers depend on our advanced forecasting to make critical decisions regarding color choices for their vehicle lineup two to four years in advance," said David Fischer, Vice President of Marketing for Axalta's global light vehicle OEM business.
