Strongest And Most Efficient Hybrid SUV In The World: Volvo XC90 T8
|   Tuesday, December 23, 2014
The Volvo XC90 T8 is the first model of the Swedish brand developed from scratch with a plug-in hybrid version in mind, and it boasts a combined fuel consumption of just 2.5 liters per 100 km, in the context that the hybrid system announces a power output of 400 hp and a torque 640 Nm.

These resources qualify the XC90 T8, at the same time, for the title of most powerful hybrid SUV on the market and for the title of most fuel efficient SUV available.
Its CO2 emissions are 59 grams per kilometer in the mixed cycle, an incredible result for an SUV, and comparable to compact or subcompact models with hybrid propulsion systems.

"The XC90 T8 is a plug-in electric car, hybrid car and high-performance car rolled into one," said Dr Peter Mertens, Senior Vice President Research and Development at Volvo Car Group. "The Drive-E engines already offer highly competitive performance versus the competition. The T8 takes it further into a leading position."
The hybrid system of the XC90 T8 consists of a 2.0 turbo engine with four in-line cylinders, supported by an 80 hp electric motor with a torque of 240 Nm.

Thanks to these resources, the Swedish model can accelerate from 0 to 100 km / h in 5.9 seconds. The car has an additional electric motor located between the internal combustion engine and the eight-speed transmission. Thus, this unit developed 46 hp and helps the transition from 100 percent electric running mode to hybrid running mode, besides the fact that it starts the internal combustion unit, each time it is needed, replacing a traditional starter. The 46 hp electric motor can also act as an electricity generator being able to charge the Swedish hybrid's lithium-ion battery.
The car has 5 different driving modes.

Hybrid mode: the default mode, ready for everyday use. The vehicle will automatically change from using power from the 2-liter, 4-cylinder Drive-E engine and the electric motor to deliver the best overall fuel consumption.

Pure electric mode: The XC90 T8 has a range of over 40 km on electricity alone. This figure represents the total distance most people drive in one day. Due to the regenerative braking system, this mode is highly efficient in city environments. If extra power is required, the Drive-E engine kicks in automatically.
Power mode: This mode has better torque at lower revs, similar to what a large V8 engine has.

AWD mode: This mode offers persistent all-wheel drive. The significant advantage of being able to use AWD whenever the driver really needs it is that potentially large amounts of energy can be saved for later use.

Save mode: If the battery is charged enough, this mode allows the "freezing" of the battery level and save it for later use with the Pure Electric drive. If, on the other hand, the battery is low, the driver can use the traditional engine to recharge the battery to a certain level before using it again with the Pure Electric drive.
