Spy Images of the Honda Civic Type R Leaked
|   Friday, May 23, 2014
Spy images of the planned Honda Civic Type R, has been revealed, testing against its arch rivals, getting ready to be launched across global markets by 2015. This new hot hatch is expected to displace around 355 BHP, which should give it a credible performance boost owing to greater power to weight ratio, against most rivals in class. The Type R is expected to rival Mercedes Benz's A45 AMG hatch, which has also been spotted around the track, at Honda's European testing facility.

The best part about the Civic Type R reveal, at this moment, is the fact that it sports minimum camouflage, hinting at a production ready variant. We could witness formal announcements soon and have kept out hopes up. Honda revealed its concept back in march 2013, at the Geneva Motor Show, while various similarities can be drawn between both these vehicles.

The concept drew attention to its futuristic and aerodynamic exterior design pattern, which has been carried forward to the production variant too. The Honda Civic Type R will be competing with flagship vehicles such as Renault's Mégane Renaultsport, Volkswagen Golf R, Vauxhall Astra and Seat's Leon Cupra. Numerous modifications adorn this vehicle, while some of these changes include, reduced ride height – 30 mm drop – flared arches, rear wing and redesigned front and rear bumpers.

The Civic Type R is based on a front wheel drive train, being powered by a turbocharged 2.0 liter four cylindered engine, displacing 276 BHP, although this engine pot is capable of displacing close to 300 BHP. The Type R is their most advanced and extreme variant yet. Official torque figures are yet to be affirmed, even though experts are hoping for 300+ ft lb at 2,000 RPM.

Current estimated value puts acceleration from 0 – 60 MPH under 6.0 seconds, although final figures need to be seen, to understand its actual value. Speed enthusiasts will be happy to know that Honda has mated their turbo charged engine block, to a six speed manual gear box, which is better suited to this drive train. The prevalent dual clutch automated six speed gearbox has its limitations, which this setup seeks to replace.

Honda claims that their Civic Type R is capable of covering the Nürburgring track within eight minutes. This is remarkable for a vehicle of its stature. Front wheel drive vehicles are not really considered agile, as they have various limitations when it comes to speed.

However, they usually handle better than most rear wheel drive vehicle, as they have better rear tire grip. The Seat Cupra is a potent rival, for the same reasons, which makes the Honda dangerous.

We would also like to look out for Renault's Mégane Renaultsport, as it poses threat for Honda. We are eagerly awaiting track testing on the production model and hope that it stays true t its original prototype performance points. Honda's Civic Type R proto type was a class leader and we were fairly impressed with what was on offer. Come back soon, for latest updates!
