Detroit Electric is a name of the past. It is an automobile manufacturing brand hat went out of business in the 1930s. It is one of the first few brands to initiate the inclusion of electric motors in the power train of a car. The company was doing well in terms of sales figures and produced some 13,000 vehicles before it went out of business.

The production of cars previously under Detroit Electrics was then taken up by a company previously known as Lotus Engineering in the year 2008.
Now Detroit Electric is making a comeback into the automobile market with a two seater which comes with an all electric drive train, and promotes the existing image of the company.

The new SP:01 from Detroit Electric is supposedly a one of a kind vehicle from the company. Only 999 units of this model have been manufactured. This has been done to avoid the label of mass production or production by volume in the car and make it an exclusive item.

The car seems to be based on a Lotus Elise chassis. This is one of the most intriguing features of the car, though at first site it seems to be much more than just a Lotus Elise. Interestingly enough, the all electric drive train is not the most significant aspect of the car. The features which sidelines such a unique drive train is bound to attract a good customer base for the company.

The first aspect of this two seater worth noticing is the exterior designing of the car. Almost all the features in the exterior of the car have been modified, although some features remains the same. The aspect of the exterior of the car that has been unchanged includes doors, the signature mirror mount, the firewall and the windshield and frames.

All the other things appear to be tailor made. The URT group is supplying the various bodywork articles for the SP:01. The curves and folds in the design of the car makes the SP:01 more appealing to the eye. The vertical backlight and the aerodynamic design of the car, which has been streamlined, give it a sleek and athletic look. The car is filled with some of the most up to date multimedia features.

The two lithium batteries provide the power to the car. The 240volt 31 ampere circuit takes more than a day to reach full charge, and is supposed to provide a range of 180 miles. The 240 volts 13 ampere circuit can take 8 hours to reach full charge. The power provided by the lithium batteries is commendable, 201 horsepower. The torque produced by this drive train is 166 lb ft.

The 2403 pound two seater will have a four speed manual transmission system, good pickup and better high speed. The car has been priced at 35,000 dollars, which lies well within the affordable range. The car has received some good reviews, and considering the overall performance, it is a car well worth buying.
